Overview
This role involves supporting the Head of Tax in building a scalable tax function capable of managing rapid growth, complex financing, and increasing compliance and reporting demands. The Senior Tax Manager will own key tax workstreams end-to-end, including global tax provisions and direct and indirect compliance management, while collaborating cross-functionally to enhance governance, documentation, and controls. The position is hands-on and process-oriented, focusing on establishing durable tax operations and SOX-ready controls.
Location: Candidates located near offices in Palo Alto, California or Toronto, Canada may be asked to work in a hybrid capacity.
Responsibilities
- Support the Head of Tax in operating and scaling the global tax function, including planning, prioritization, and execution across tax provisions, compliance, audits, and special projects.
- Lead income tax accounting activities, preparing interim and annual tax provision deliverables under ASC 740 and local statutory financials (including current/deferred taxes, footnote disclosures, valuation allowance analysis, and documentation of key positions).
- Develop and maintain a SOX-ready tax close and reporting process, including control design, documentation, and evidence standards, in partnership with Accounting, Internal Audit, and external auditors.
- Manage global income tax compliance, coordinating extensions, estimated payments, and tax notice resolution.
- Collaborate with Accounting and FP&A to improve book-to-tax data readiness, including trial balance mapping, fixed assets, stock-based compensation, R&D capitalization/Section 174 impacts, interest limitation considerations, and other recurring book-tax differences.
- Establish and operate indirect tax processes and compliance (sales/use tax; VAT/GST), working with Revenue Operations and Deal Desk on taxability questions and exemption documentation.
- Assist with data center exemption efforts.
- Support international tax and transfer pricing initiatives as the business footprint expands, coordinating with external advisors on policy, documentation, and compliance.
- Create clear, repeatable tax documentation such as process narratives, position memos, and workpapers to improve auditability.
- Collaborate with Legal, Payroll, and Operations on tax-sensitive initiatives including entity changes, intercompany agreements, new jurisdictions, and vendor/customer structuring.
- Drive innovation and automation of existing processes to increase accuracy and efficiency in global tax reporting and compliance.
Requirements
- CPA and/or MS in Tax preferred.
- Minimum of 8 years of progressive tax experience in public accounting and/or in-house roles, with significant exposure to high-growth, multi-entity environments; pre-IPO and/or public-company readiness experience strongly preferred.
- Strong hands-on experience with ASC 740 income tax accounting and provision processes, including high-quality documentation and audit support.
- Experience with income tax reporting for global local statutory financials.
- Demonstrated experience building and operating SOX-aligned controls for tax processes, including control design, documentation, evidence collection, and issue remediation.
- Solid foundation in global corporate income tax compliance, including managing tax vendors and ensuring deliverable quality and timelines.
- Proven ability to partner closely with Accounting and Finance stakeholders, translating complex inputs into clean, supportable tax outputs and workpapers.
- Exposure to financing- and debt-related tax matters or strong interest and ability to quickly ramp up, including working with advisors on technical analysis and documentation.
- Clear communicator with strong technical writing skills (memos, process documentation) and ability to independently drive workstreams in an ambiguous, fast-paced environment.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, demonstrating meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
Compensation & Benefits
Compensation is competitive and follows a Total Cash philosophy that incorporates potential bonus value directly into base pay. The total cash salary range for this position is determined by geographic location, experience, skills, and alignment with internal compensation standards. This range applies to candidates located in the United States; compensation for international candidates will vary based on local market conditions. The role currently offers a quarterly bonus as an interim alternative to equity, with plans to introduce long-term incentive programs in the near future.
