Overview
This role is part of a growing tax, accounting, and advisory practice serving small businesses and entrepreneurs. The team leverages proprietary AI to reduce routine tasks and support higher-value client work. Tax Associates work directly with senior practitioners who review returns and provide specific feedback.
This position can be performed from anywhere in the continental United States. Please note that the majority of clients are in California.
Responsibilities
Tax Preparation & Compliance
- Prepare federal, state, and local returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other entities.
- Gather and organize client financial information, and identify when items are missing before review.
- Build workpapers, supporting schedules, and documentation that others can pick up and follow.
- Meet filing deadlines for returns and extensions.
- Research federal, state, and local tax issues (regulations, open questions, and potential savings opportunities) and document sources.
- Track changes in tax law and apply them to assigned engagements.
- Maintain client files and records to a standard suitable for audit.
Client Support
- Respond to client questions related to returns, notices, and general tax matters; escalate items above your level rather than guessing.
- Collect required information from clients to keep filings on schedule.
- Communicate professionally, protect confidentiality, and provide timely, accurate guidance.
Learning & Development
- Develop depth in tax law and regulations, including how the work is executed in practice.
- Use internal training and professional development to address gaps identified by your reviewer.
- Apply what you learn to improve workflows for the broader team.
Requirements
Core Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
- 0–3 years in tax, accounting, or a related field.
- Working understanding of federal, state, and local tax laws and regulations.
- Attention to detail and strong organizational skills to manage multiple returns at different stages.
- Ability to ask the right questions and get to the right answers.
- Clear written and verbal communication with clients and colleagues.
- Proficiency in Excel and Word.
Helpful Qualifications
- Actively pursuing CPA or EA.
- Internship or entry-level experience in a public accounting firm or an accounting department.
- Familiarity with professional tax software (UltraTax, Axcess Tax, Drake, Lacerte, or similar).
- Strong research skills, including the ability to read a regulation and interpret its meaning.
