Overview
This role involves managing all aspects of the tax function for a large, multi-entity organization specializing in facilities, fleet, and asset management services across various industries including manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and hospitality. The Tax Manager will oversee compliance, planning, audit management, and system integration for both indirect and direct taxes across multiple jurisdictions. Reporting to the Corporate Controller, this position supports nationwide operations and works closely with finance, accounting, payroll, and business unit leaders.
Responsibilities
Leadership & Oversight
- Lead and develop the Tax team to ensure accurate and timely tax deliverables.
- Establish scalable processes and controls to support organizational growth and acquisitions.
- Collaborate with executive leadership on tax strategy, reporting, and risk management.
Sales & Use Tax (Indirect Tax)
- Manage multi-jurisdictional sales and use tax filings on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
- Review indirect tax accruals, reconciliations, and taxability determinations.
- Oversee exemption certificate management and nexus compliance.
- Coordinate with business unit financial leadership and third-party providers.
- Monitor legislative changes to ensure timely compliance.
Personal Property Tax
- Manage compliance including filings, renditions, and assessments across jurisdictions.
- Maintain alignment of fixed asset data with tax reporting requirements.
- Review assessments and pursue appeals to minimize tax exposure.
Income Tax
- Coordinate preparation and review of federal, state, and local income tax filings with external advisors.
- Liaise with individual investors, private equity sponsors, and tax advisors regarding K-1s and tax distributions.
- Support tax provision (ASC 740) including income tax expense, deferred taxes, and disclosures.
- Manage estimated payments, extensions, and intercompany tax considerations.
- Identify and implement tax planning strategies to optimize effective tax rate.
Audit & Compliance
- Lead all tax audits and manage relationships with tax authorities and external advisors.
- Track and resolve tax notices, assessments, and disputes.
- Ensure proper documentation, record retention, and audit readiness.
Systems, Process & Controls
- Evaluate and enhance ERP and tax systems for accurate reporting and compliance.
- Implement process improvements to increase efficiency and reduce risk.
- Ensure alignment between accounting systems, fixed asset systems, and tax reporting.
Private Equity & Strategic Initiatives
- Support due diligence and tax structuring for acquisitions and divestitures.
- Lead tax integration efforts for newly acquired businesses.
- Provide tax insights to support EBITDA optimization and cash flow planning.
- Assist with lender and investor reporting related to tax matters.
Advisory & Cross-Functional Support
- Provide tax guidance on transactions, contracts, and operational decisions.
- Deliver tax training to minimize risk and improve compliance.
- Collaborate on 1099 reporting and other compliance items.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position includes supervisory duties.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of tax experience including strong Sales & Use Tax background, Personal Property Tax, and Income Tax.
- Experience in a multi-entity, multi-state environment; private equity or high-growth experience preferred.
- Experience managing external tax advisors and audits.
- Strong analytical, leadership, and communication skills.
- Must pass a criminal history background check and drug screen.
