Overview
This role manages income tax accounting and compliance across all U.S. and Canadian entities and jurisdictions. Responsibilities include overseeing the ASC 740 provision process, coordinating outsourced preparation of federal, state, provincial, and foreign tax returns, and managing indirect tax and tax calendar compliance. The ideal candidate combines strong technical tax expertise with a process-improvement mindset, working cross-functionally to strengthen controls, improve accuracy, and drive efficiency.
Responsibilities
- Manage income tax compliance and tax accounting, including development of short- and long-term strategies
- Manage and review the ASC 740 income tax provision process for all entities/jurisdictions, including execution of internal controls
- Manage and review monthly reconciliation of tax accounts
- Prepare/review tax footnotes for quarterly and/or annual financial statements
- Manage outsourced preparation of federal, state, and foreign tax returns with a third-party accounting firm, including preparation/review of workpapers/schedules and review of completed returns
- Manage and review the tax payments process for all entities/jurisdictions
- Manage property tax, use tax, GST/HST or other indirect taxes
- Assist with Canadian federal and provincial income tax compliance, including T2 corporate returns, installment payments, and related information filings
- Identify, quantify, and document available tax credits and incentives across jurisdictions; coordinate with external specialists as needed
- Prepare/review annual return-to-provision analysis, document variances between filed returns and recorded provisions, and post required adjustments to deferred tax balances
- Own and maintain the overall tax calendar, monitoring tax filing, payment, provision, compliance, and other tax-related deadlines across all entities/jurisdictions; coordinate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely completion
- Quantify exposure items, resolve tax notices/inquiries timely, and assist with tax audits
- Research tax issues, identify planning opportunities, and summarize/document impacts
- Analyze tax processes and recommend improvements
- Proactively communicate risks, opportunities, challenges, and regular updates on progress
Qualifications
- Proficiency in tax provision software preferred (Onesource)
- Proficiency in General Ledger accounting and ERP systems
- Advanced Excel proficiency required
- Deep technical expertise in ASC 740 accounting for income taxes, including deferred taxes, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, and effective tax rate analysis
- Demonstrated analytical problem-solving skills and the ability to introduce process efficiencies through automation and the use of AI
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex concepts for diverse audiences
- Experience with Canadian tax code and U.S./Canada cross-border tax planning is a plus
- Highly organized and self-directed, with strong time management skills and ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
Education / Equivalent Experience
- 6+ years of experience in corporate income tax accounting and compliance, including experience in a managerial role; mix of corporate tax department and national public accounting firm experience highly preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting from an accredited college or university
- Master’s degree in taxation preferred
- CPA certification preferred
Compensation & Benefits
- Base Salary: $115,000–$145,000 USD
