Overview

This role is responsible for owning direct and indirect tax across U.S., U.K., and Canadian entities, serving as the internal owner of every tax filing, payment, and tax position. You will manage third-party advisors as an extension of the internal team and build processes and controls that stand up through audit and IPO readiness. In addition to compliance, the role focuses on identifying opportunities to reduce tax exposure and cash tax cost.

The position also owns all financial transparency reporting for a significant U.K. public-sector contract governed by the U.K. government’s Open Book Data requirements, including full visibility into the costs, pricing, and margin behind services delivered.

Responsibilities

Tax compliance and reporting

  • Own U.S. federal and state income tax compliance in partnership with external advisors, including tax attribute tracking and international reporting for foreign subsidiaries.
  • Own U.S. sales and use tax, including collection and remittance, exemption certificate management for government agency customers, and nexus monitoring.
  • Lead the design and rollout of a multi-state use tax apportionment approach for software purchases to reduce sales tax cost.
  • Own corporation tax, VAT, GST/HST, and statutory filings for U.K. and Canadian subsidiaries.
  • Manage the transfer pricing framework for cost-plus entities, including intercompany agreements and documentation.
  • Prepare or review the quarterly and annual ASC 740 tax provision and support external audit on tax matters.

U.K. Open Book Data reporting

  • Own Open Book Data reporting on a major U.K. public-sector contract, including maintaining the contract financial model and reconciling actual costs, revenue, and margin to the model.
  • Prepare and submit periodic Open Book reports to the customer authority within contractual deadlines.
  • Act as the primary finance point of contact for customer financial inquiries and lead responses to audits or reviews exercised under the contract’s audit rights.
  • Work with commercial, delivery, and accounting teams to ensure costs are captured and allocated at the level of detail required for Open Book reporting.

Tax strategy and governance

  • Identify opportunities to reduce tax exposure and cash tax cost, and advise leadership on tax implications of new contracts, jurisdictions, and acquisitions.
  • Manage third-party tax advisors and build scalable, well-documented processes and controls.
  • Proactively identify and bring well-supported recommendations to leadership across all jurisdictions.

Security and responsible conduct (company policy)

  • Use electronic information resources appropriately.
  • Follow relevant security policies and guidelines.
  • Protect resources under your control (e.g., passwords, computers, and data you create, receive, or download).
  • Promptly report security-related incidents and violations, including responding to official reports of security incidents involving systems or accounts.

Requirements

  • 6+ years of progressive tax experience; ideally includes time at a Big 4 or national accounting firm and time in-house at a multinational company.
  • CPA (U.S.), CTA or ACA (U.K.), or CPA (Canada), or an equivalent professional qualification.
  • Hands-on experience with both direct and indirect tax across more than one country; exposure to the U.S., U.K., and Canada is strongly preferred.
  • Solid working knowledge of U.S. sales and use tax as it applies to SaaS and digital products, including multi-state sourcing and apportionment.
  • Experience with ASC 740 tax provisions and with supporting financial statement audits.
  • Working knowledge of transfer pricing for cost-plus service arrangements.
  • Comfort managing outside advisors, meeting deadlines and quality standards, and challenging conclusions when warranted.
  • Track record of finding and executing tax savings opportunities.
  • Strong analytical and Excel skills; NetSuite and sales tax automation tools experience is a plus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with U.K. public-sector contracts, Open Book Data, or government contract cost accounting.
  • Experience in a venture-backed or pre-IPO company.
  • Familiarity with government and tax-exempt customer bases.
