Overview
A growing energy technology company is seeking a Tax Manager to join their team. This role reports to the Senior Director of Tax and is responsible for ensuring compliance with tax laws and regulations, maintaining strong controls, improving tax processes, and supporting strategic initiatives. The position requires a proactive, detail-oriented professional capable of working independently and collaborating cross-functionally to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of the tax function.
Responsibilities
ASC 740 Income Tax Accounting
- Manage quarterly and annual tax provision processes, including ASC 740 calculations, supporting schedules, and coordination with external consultants.
- Calculate and analyze current and deferred tax provisions, valuation allowances, uncertain tax positions, effective tax rate (ETR), and financial statement tax footnote disclosures.
- Ensure accuracy of tax-related general ledger accounts and oversee tax accounting controls and documentation.
- Research and determine proper tax treatment for significant or non-routine transactions in coordination with Accounting, Finance, and Legal teams.
- Support external auditors by responding to technical inquiries and providing documentation.
Tax Compliance
- Oversee the full lifecycle of income tax compliance, including data gathering, preparation, review, and filing of U.S. federal, state, and international income tax returns prepared by third-party providers.
- Review tax returns for technical accuracy, completeness, and consistency with processes and tax provision.
- Manage fixed asset tax processes, including review of additions, disposals, depreciation calculations, and roll-forwards.
- Monitor compliance filing deadlines across jurisdictions to ensure timely submissions.
- Manage preparation and filing of U.S. state and local franchise and indirect tax returns.
- Monitor and implement responses to tax legislation and regulatory developments.
- Maintain and enhance internal controls over income tax processes, including SOX compliance where applicable.
- Assist with tax due diligence and integration activities related to mergers and acquisitions.
- Manage federal, state, and local tax audits and inquiries, serving as primary contact with tax authorities and external advisors.
- Build positive relationships with tax authorities to support efficient audits and issue resolution.
Technology and Process
- Identify and implement tax process improvements, standardization, automation, and technology enhancements.
- Collaborate with Accounting, Treasury, Legal, Procurement, and IT to strengthen tax processes and improve data quality.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation of tax processes and methodologies.
- Ensure integrity and reconciliation of data between financial systems and tax reporting tools.
Team Building
- Plan and build the tax team, including candidate evaluation, development, coaching, and training of new hires.
- Conduct performance reviews and evaluations to ensure accountability and professional growth.
- Foster a strong team culture and psychologically safe environment.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance.
- CPA required; MBA or MST preferred.
- 7-10+ years of progressive experience in public accounting and/or corporate tax, including federal and state income tax for C Corporations.
- 3+ years managing a team.
- Deep technical knowledge of ASC 740 and U.S. federal and corporate tax laws.
- Experience with tax provision software (e.g., OneSource, Corptax) and ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle).
- Strong understanding of tax data inputs/outputs and downstream dependencies (ERP/GL, subledgers, consolidation, reporting).
- Knowledge of SOX/control environments and designing auditable processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a fast-paced environment.

- Experience in fast-growth startups and public companies.
- Background in the energy sector or technology companies.
- Experience commercializing First of a Kind (FOAK) technologies from an investor perspective.
- Experience implementing AI in tax operations and automation.
- Willingness to relocate if required.

- Salary range: $145,000 - $165,000, dependent on experience.

Location & Travel
- Remote position with required travel to headquarters in Santa Clara, CA twice per quarter for team meetings, off-sites, and company events.
- First two weeks of onboarding require in-person attendance at headquarters.
