Overview
This role supports UK small business clients by preparing bookkeeping, VAT returns, and draft year-end accounts. Work is performed within a pod of five led by a UK-based Senior Accounts Manager (two senior accountants, two accountants, and a bookkeeper). The pod serves approximately 300 UK small business clients from January and grows to around 500 through 2027.
Until the manager starts in January, you will work in one of the organization’s existing UK teams. A Senior Accountant reviews your work. As you grow in the role, you will take on year-end accounts and corporation tax returns.
Responsibilities
- Keep clients’ books up to date in Xero, including:
- Bank reconciliations
- Sales and purchase ledgers
- Month and year end adjustments
- Prepare VAT returns under Making Tax Digital for review.
- Prepare draft year end accounts and, as you grow, corporation tax returns.
- Check your own work before sending it for review and act on corrections.
- Chase clients early for missing records, and notify your Senior Accountant when a deadline is at risk.
- Keep client records and workflow data accurate and up to date.
- Use AI tools being built into products and workflows.
Key outcomes (first 6–12 months)
- Bookkeeping and VAT returns are ready for review before deadlines, with client delays chased early and recorded.
- Fewer review rounds are required, measured from when you start.
- By month 12, you prepare draft year end accounts and CT600s for review.
- Workflow data for clients is accurate and up to date.
Requirements
- Degree in commerce, accounting or finance (for example B.Com or BS Accountancy).
- At least 2 years in accounting, including at least 1 on UK clients: bookkeeping, bank reconciliations and VAT returns.
- Confident with Xero, QuickBooks or a similar cloud accounting package.
- Written English good enough to email UK clients directly.
- Based in India or the Philippines, with the right to work there.
- Able to work a shift that overlaps UK business hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Has prepared draft UK year end accounts or CT600s.
Must-have attributes
- Ownership: finish what you start and fix problems rather than pass them on.
- Accuracy: check your own numbers before anyone else has to.
- Takes feedback well: act on corrections and avoid repeating the same mistake.
- Great communicator: clear in writing with UK clients and with your reviewer.
- Process, data and compliance: follow process and keep records clean.
- One team: help the rest of the pod, not just your own clients.
- Open to AI: comfortable with tools taking on more routine work.
Interview process
- Talent Acquisition screening call: 30 minutes
- Live technical assessment: ~60–90 minutes (hands-on bookkeeping capability)
- Technical interview: 45–60 minutes with the Accounting manager
- Soft skills interview: ~15–30 minutes with the hiring team
