Overview

This role prepares bookkeeping, VAT returns, and draft year-end accounts for UK small business clients. You will work in a pod of five, led by a UK-based Senior Accounts Manager (two senior accountants, two accountants, and a bookkeeper), supporting approximately 300 UK small business clients from January, growing to around 500 through 2027.

Until the manager starts in January, you will work in one of the existing UK teams. A Senior Accountant reviews your work to ensure accuracy and timely submission.

Responsibilities

  • Keep clients’ books up to date in Xero, including:
    • Bank reconciliations
    • Sales and purchase ledgers
    • Month and year-end adjustments
  • Prepare VAT returns under Making Tax Digital for review.
  • Prepare draft year-end accounts and, as you grow, corporation tax returns.
  • Check your own work before sending it for review and act on corrections.
  • Chase clients early for missing records.
  • Inform your Senior Accountant in good time when a deadline is at risk.
  • Keep client records and workflow data accurate and up to date.
  • Use AI tools being integrated into products and workflows.

Key outcomes (first 6–12 months)

  • Bookkeeping and VAT returns are ready for review before deadlines, with early chasing of client delays.
  • Work requires fewer review rounds, measured from when you start.
  • By month 12, prepare draft year-end accounts and CT600s for review (not only bookkeeping and VAT).
  • Workflow data for clients remains accurate and up to date.

Requirements (Must-have)

  • Degree in commerce, accounting, or finance (for example B.Com or BS Accountancy).
  • At least 2 years in accounting, including at least 1 on UK clients covering bookkeeping, bank reconciliations, and VAT returns.
  • Confident with Xero, QuickBooks, or a similar cloud accounting package.
  • Written English good enough to email UK clients directly.
  • Based in India or the Philippines, with the right to work there.
  • Able to work a shift that overlaps UK business hours.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Has prepared draft UK year-end accounts or CT600s.

Skills & attributes

  • Ownership: finish what you start and fix problems rather than pass them on.
  • Accuracy: check your own numbers before others need to.
  • Takes feedback well: act on corrections and avoid repeating the same mistakes.
  • Communication: clear in writing with UK clients and with your reviewer.
  • Process, data, and compliance: follow the process and keep records clean.
  • Team mindset: support the broader pod, not only your own clients.
  • Openness to AI: comfortable with tools taking on more routine work.

Interview process

  • Talent Acquisition Screening Call (30 minutes)
  • Live Technical Assessment (~60–90 minutes)
  • Technical Interview with the Accounting manager (45–60 minutes)
  • Soft Skills Interview with the hiring team (~15–30 minutes)
  • Reference Verification: one professional reference check with your recent direct manager or supervisor (may be initiated during final interview stages)
