Overview
This role is an Accounting Manager, GL & Close position responsible for driving critical parts of the monthly close for an organization scaling through its first external audit and toward public markets. You will report to the Chief Accounting Officer on a small, lean finance team and will transition to the Senior Director, Accounting once that role is filled.
This is a hands-on position with ownership of the judgment-heavy areas of the close and the tie-out/story that finance leadership relies on. The close you inherit is designed like a startup close; the close you leave behind must be audit-ready for an external audit, an ERP migration off Xero, and SOX, while operating with a team that stays small by leveraging AI and automation.
Responsibilities
- Drive the monthly close forward by owning critical-path workstreams through completion; chase open items, unblock the team, escalate early, and keep the close calendar on track.
- Prepare complex, judgment-based accounting areas, including (examples) stock-based compensation, leases, capitalized software, payroll and compensation accruals, intercompany activity, and foreign currency.
- Review established accounting areas prepared by the Senior Accountant and an offshore team, including (examples) fixed assets, prepaids, cash, recurring accruals and journal entries, AP, and expense reports; set and teach the quality bar while also stepping in to prepare when volume, timing, or complexity requires it.
- Own the tie-out and close narrative, including consolidation and the close package, plus flux (month-over-month and budget-to-actual) presented in narrative form for the CAO and CFO.
- Manage and develop the team by coaching the Senior Accountant, delegating in a way that builds capability, and helping hire the next accountant as the organization scales.
- Serve as a day-to-day owner in the first external audit by building PBC packages for your areas, running walkthroughs, and answering auditors directly.
- Design close controls that survive SOX with documented, evidenced, and repeatable processes built in now (not retrofitted the year before filing).
- Own a workstream in the ERP migration off Xero, including close-process design, subledger and schedule migration, cutover reconciliations, and parallel-run validation.
- Rebuild parts of the close process around AI, including (examples) reconciliation matching, anomaly detection, schedule and rollforward generation, first-draft entries and flux narratives, PBC assembly, and workflow automation—building tooling the team can run without you.
Requirements
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of technical close areas (examples: stock compensation, leases, capitalized software, or payroll accounting) and real experience reviewing another accountant’s work.
- Active CPA preferred; Big 4 or national firm foundation a plus.
- Deep operational US GAAP fluency where it’s hardest, including capitalization judgment, equity compensation, leases, payroll and compensation, intercompany, foreign currency, and cutoff; ability to build schedules from a blank page.
- Hands-on ERP and systems experience, with comfort using (examples) equity administration platforms (Carta or similar), payroll systems, close tooling (Numeric, FloQast, BlackLine or similar), and spend platforms (Ramp or similar).
- Demonstrated AI-native working style (required): daily use of LLMs on accounting work; specific, reasoned views on where AI is trustworthy in a close (examples listed in Responsibilities) and where it is not (materiality calls, capitalization judgment, cutoff, novel technical positions). At least one thing you’ve built is in daily use by people other than you.
- Comfort writing and maintaining small scripts for schedules, reconciliations, data pulls, and automation (examples: Python, SQL, Apps Script).
- Strong reviewer instincts: review work in a way that raises the bar and provides feedback the other person can use.
- Builder mindset: comfort with ambiguity, no waiting for a playbook, and strong bias to ship.
- Strong written communication: explain variances and technical entries to non-finance leaders without losing them, and write audit support materials auditors don’t need to come back on.
- High integrity, high ownership, low ego.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience preparing for or running a company’s first external audit.
- Experience implementing or migrating an ERP—particularly off a small-business system onto a scale platform.
- SaaS, usage-based, or AI infrastructure accounting experience.
- Exposure to multi-entity and international intercompany accounting.
- SOX control design and documentation experience, or experience with a public-company close.
- Experience working with an offshore or outsourced accounting team.
- Reasoned views on the modern accounting stack (examples: NetSuite, Rillet, Numeric, FloQast, Carta, Ramp) developed through use rather than vendor materials.
