Overview
The organization is seeking a Senior Accountant and Process Optimization Expert for a project-based engagement supporting a large international Managing General Agent (MGA).
This role works directly with finance leadership and will join a distributed U.S. accounting group to resolve complex reconciliations, modernize the month-end close, and introduce AI and automation into legacy workflows.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the claims accounting area, including complex catch-up work, resolving historical discrepancies, and establishing clean “go-forward” processes for premium trust and claims funding.
- Shadow the team through month-end close and day-to-day operations to:
- map existing workflows
- identify bottlenecks
- recommend efficiency improvements for data flow between the MGA and carrier partners.
- Use advanced Excel, automation tools, and AI capabilities to eliminate manual data entry and streamline cross-system reporting, including high-volume bank reconciliations and bordereaux reporting.
- Partner with finance leadership by providing technical accounting context and driving continuous improvement across teams in San Diego, Dallas, New York, and North Carolina.
What This Role Is Not
- Not pure staff augmentation (clerical/day-to-day resources already exist). This position focuses on challenging how work is done.
- Not basic bookkeeping; the work includes complex MGA accounting, historical catch-ups, and untangling legacy processes.
- Not order-taking; the role requires proactive identification of inefficiencies, questioning existing processes, and proposing solutions.
Requirements
- Deep experience in the insurance sector, including specific knowledge of MGA/delegated authority models, premium trust accounting, and carrier reporting.
- Strong understanding of complex accounting frameworks; CPA/CA preferred.
- Ability to untangle legacy reconciliation issues.
- Proven experience optimizing finance and accounting workflows.
- Highly proficient in Excel, with demonstrated ability to apply automation or AI tools to finance workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
- Formal training in Lean Six Sigma (plus, but not required).
Engagement Details
- Start timing: Expected to kick off within the next month, ramping up as the team approaches year-end.
- Duration: Flexible initial length; project-based support with potential to extend into a longer-term relationship based on performance.
- Capacity: Full time (40h per week).
Location & Hours
- Remote.
- Must be onshore or fully capable of aligning with U.S. working hours, with a strong preference for West Coast hours.
Compensation & Benefits
- Not specified in the provided description.
