Overview
This role is a project-based engagement with the finance leadership team of a large international Managing General Agent (MGA). The position supports a distributed U.S. accounting group by resolving complex reconciliations, modernizing the month-end close, and improving legacy workflows through automation and AI.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the claims accounting area, including complex catch-up work, resolving historical discrepancies, and establishing clean go-forward processes for premium trust and claims funding.
- Shadow the team through month-end close and day-to-day operations to map existing workflows, identify bottlenecks, and recommend efficiency improvements for data flow between the MGA and carrier partners.
- Leverage advanced Excel, automation tools, and AI capabilities (such as Copilot Pro) to reduce manual data entry and streamline cross-system reporting (including high-volume bank reconciliations and bordereaux reporting).
- Serve as a thought partner to finance leadership by providing technical accounting context and driving a culture of continuous improvement across teams located in San Diego, Dallas, New York, and North Carolina.
What this role is not
- Not pure staff augmentation; clerical/day-to-day execution resources are already in place. Focus is on challenging and improving how work is done.
- Not basic bookkeeping; the work includes complex MGA accounting, historical catch-ups, and untangling legacy processes.
- Not order-taking; proactive identification of inefficiencies, questioning of existing processes, and proposing solutions are required.
Requirements
- Deep experience in the insurance sector, including knowledge of MGA/delegated authority models, premium trust accounting, and carrier reporting.
- Strong understanding of complex accounting frameworks, with the ability to untangle legacy reconciliation issues.
- Proven track record of optimizing finance and accounting workflows.
- Highly proficient in Excel, with demonstrated ability to apply automation or AI tools to finance workflows.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA/CA preferred.
- Formal training in Lean Six Sigma is a plus but not required.
