Overview

An organization is seeking an Associate Manager for Indirect Tax Audit Analytics to join their Tax Controversy team. This team focuses on managing tax audits and appeals related to indirect taxes such as sales and use tax and gross receipts tax. The role involves working closely with senior tax professionals and cross-functional partners in Tax, Accounting, and Tax Technology.

This position is remote within the United States and may require limited travel for team events or offsites.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the data and analytics expert for the Tax Controversy team, providing clear, well-documented answers to audit questions using large and complex transactional datasets.
  • Develop expertise in sales and use tax issues, including marketplace facilitator laws, and gross receipts taxes.
  • Lead the adoption and application of modern AI tools to support audit work, including processing auditor workpapers, summarizing transaction data, drafting initial responses, and identifying data patterns.
  • Collaborate closely with the Tax Technology team to understand and leverage data flows.
  • Manage a variety of tasks ranging from one-off auditor requests to extensive data projects.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in state and local tax compliance, audits, or controversy within a tax function such as a Big 4 or consulting firm indirect tax practice, a state revenue agency, or an in-house corporate tax team.
  • Strong passion and ability to analyze data independently, identify issues, and draw conclusions.
  • Thorough understanding of sales and use taxes, including marketplace facilitator laws; experience with U.S. gross receipts taxes (e.g., Washington B&O, San Francisco GRT, Ohio CAT, Oregon CAT) is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency in analyzing large transactional datasets and presenting findings clearly to auditors and internal stakeholders.
  • Fluency in Microsoft Excel and competence with Alteryx.
  • Comfortable working with tax technology or data engineering teams.
  • Experience using modern AI tools (e.g., Claude) professionally, with concrete examples of improving work quality, speed, or accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to manage multiple workstreams, and a strong moral compass with compassion for others.
  • Bachelor's degree or higher.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a high-growth technology, marketplace, or e-commerce company.
  • Direct experience working with state and local tax auditors (though this role is primarily focused on internal data and analysis).

Compensation & Benefits

  • Base salary range within the United States: $102,700 to $151,000 USD, localized based on work location and determined by skills, experience, qualifications, and market conditions.

Paid Time Off Details

  • Salaried roles: flexible paid time off/vacation plus 80 hours of paid sick time per year.
  • Hourly roles: vacation accrued at approximately 1 hour per 25.97 hours worked and paid sick time accrued at 1 hour per 30 hours worked.
