Overview

This is a full-time Controller role supporting a multi-site government-contracting and commercial hardware business. Reporting to the Director of Finance and Accounting, you will lead accounting, close, cost accounting, and controls, partnering across Program Management, Contracts, Operations, and Engineering to ensure project costs, inventory, and margins are reliable.

The role is a hands-on builder position in a scaling manufacturer, combining individual contributor responsibilities with coaching and process improvement as volume, sites, and contract complexity grow.

Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close and deliver accurate GAAP financial statements, consolidations, and management reporting on a predictable calendar.
  • Own accounting operations including AR, AP, and payroll, as well as general ledger, account reconciliations, fixed assets, lease accounting (ASC 842), and technical accounting judgments.
  • Run cost accounting for the manufacturing and test business, including inventory valuation, WIP, variances, scrap, and burden, to make project and product margins trustworthy.
  • Oversee project accounting in Deltek Costpoint so contract structure, funding, indirect rates, and billings align with FAR, DFARS, and CAS requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain internal accounting and financial reports for management and directors.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation.
  • Review, maintain, and improve accounting procedures and policies.
  • Partner with Contracts and Program Management on incurred-cost submissions, provisional and final rates, and DCAA, DCMA, or customer audit activity and contract briefings.
  • Build and maintain internal controls in preparation for larger audits, customer reviews, and possible financing events.
  • Prepare and manage company financial and 401(k) audits.
  • Coordinate corporate tax compliance, including sales and use tax, state registrations, annual tax filings, 1099 reporting, 3921 reporting, and other regulatory filings in partnership with external tax advisors.
  • Manage preparation and timely filing of accounting and financial reports for third parties (investors, auditors, governmental and regulatory agencies).
  • Hire, manage, and develop a high-performing accounting team (AP/AR, general ledger, and payroll), including performance evaluations and salary reviews.
  • Improve close cycle time, Deltek Costpoint configuration, and reporting so finance scales with production throughput rather than headcount.
  • Annually develop departmental objectives and recommend short-term and long-term plans to improve effectiveness of assigned functions.
  • Support FP&A and leadership with accurate, timely actuals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10–12 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager.
  • At least 4 years in a supervisory capacity.
  • Experience owning an enterprise resource planning system.
  • Experience with revenue recognition (ASC 606).
  • Manufacturing cost accounting, including inventory, job or project costing, and margin analysis.
  • Working knowledge of FAR, DFARS, CAS, incurred cost, provisional billing rates, and DCAA audit expectations.
  • Proven ability to close the books timely, manage an audit, and lead a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to work independently in a fast-paced, evolving environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA license or CMA certificate.
  • Relevant experience in manufacturing or aerospace and defense.
  • Deltek Costpoint administration (project setup, indirect rates, billing, cost reporting).
  • Experience in a smaller or earlier-stage operation, with a track record of building teams, processes, and controls in a high-growth or scaling company.
  • Comfort operating amid ambiguity, competing priorities, and a build-it-yourself mindset.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary: $128,000–$160,000 annually.
  • Final compensation will be based on factors such as experience, skills, and internal equity, and is typically made within the midrange, rather than the upper end.
  • Benefits include: generous health coverage, dental and vision plans, Flexible Time Off, parental leave, and a 401(k) with 100% company match up to 4%.

  • Remote: Strong preference for candidates in, or willing to be based near Durango, Colorado or Tulsa, Oklahoma.
