Overview

This independent contractor role focuses on high-accuracy crypto tax reconciliation for individual clients with complex histories. You’ll take ownership of each client’s case end to end—from kickoff through the final tax report—resolving missing data, tracing transactions across exchanges and wallets, and ensuring the final figures are defensible.

Responsibilities

  • Own client cases end to end (from kickoff call to final tax report)
  • Run onboarding calls to understand each client’s history, goals, and concerns
  • Manage several cases at once and deliver each accurately and on time
  • Record every judgment call and client decision so the work is defensible
  • Find every missing source of data and request what’s needed with clear steps for the client
  • Trace deposits and withdrawals back to the exchanges and wallets they came from, using:
    • Counterparty addresses
    • Blockchain explorers
    • Client transaction histories
    • Internal command-line tooling
  • Identify and correct incomplete imports (e.g., hardware wallet imported by a single address instead of its xpub, unsynced chains, or stale exchange imports)
  • Find and merge unmatched transfers, bridges, and trades
  • Classify transactions with evidence, including correcting misclassifications
    • Swaps
    • Liquidity adds and removes
    • Staking and unstaking
    • DeFi loans
    • Airdrops
    • Spam tokens
    • (and other relevant activity)
  • Make classification decisions based on transaction structure, blockchain evidence, and the client’s own words
  • Ensure data accuracy and defensibility, including:
    • Pricing obscure tokens and NFTs at the right value for the relevant date/time
    • If no credible price exists, decide on a defensible path forward
    • Resolve missing cost basis and inflated capital gains caused by root issues
  • Review 2025 movement from universal to per-wallet cost basis tracking (the Rev. Proc. 2024-28 safe harbor allocation)
  • Reconcile reported proceeds against each exchange’s Form 1099-DA and prepare Form 8949 and Schedule D figures
  • Map data from unsupported exchanges into the import template
  • Complete cases to quality standards, including:
    • Nothing disposed of without a cost basis
    • No naked deposits or withdrawals in relevant tax years
    • No remaining missing cost basis or historical price warnings
    • No misclassified or uncategorized transactions
    • No unusual, inflated, or unexplained capital gains or losses
    • No mismatches between proceeds on the 1099-DA and Form 8949
    • Every ignored transaction reviewed (spam, dust attacks, and USD transactions stay ignored; legitimate crypto activity is brought back)
  • Advise clients clearly by:
    • Walking clients through the process at the start of reconciliation
    • Communicating regularly and promptly so clients always know where their case stands
    • Delivering final reports and walking clients through results

Working with AI

  • Use AI tools (including Claude Code and internal AI tooling) as part of the analysis workflow
  • Direct the AI, verify outputs, and make and own every final judgment call and change
  • Report product bugs and workflow friction to the engineering team

Requirements

  • 1–3+ years of hands-on crypto reconciliation or crypto tax work for individual clients (not only your own portfolio)
  • Fluency with block explorers (Etherscan and related explorers, Solscan, Bitcoin explorers)
  • Understanding of DeFi lending, liquidity pools, and staking
  • Solid US crypto tax fundamentals, including:
    • Disposals vs. transfers
    • Income at fair market value
    • Holding periods
    • Cost basis methods
    • Form 8949 and Schedule D
    • Form 1099-DA
    • 2025 per-wallet basis tracking
  • Experience using crypto tax tools such as CoinLedger, Koinly, CoinTracker, TaxBit, ZenLedger, or TokenTax
  • Excel or Google Sheets skills, including reshaping raw exchange exports
  • Daily use of AI tools for analytical work, and the judgment to know when AI output is wrong (required)
  • Ability to work independently, manage your own schedule, and meet deadlines
  • Fluent professional English and comfort on client video calls
  • Based in the US and authorized to work in the US

Preferred Qualifications

  • CPA or EASQL
  • JSON-RPC or scripting experience
  • Experience with defunct-exchange recoveries (Celsius, FTX, BlockFi, Voyager)

Compensation & Benefits

  • Independent contractor role; you are responsible for paying your own taxes
  • Salary starts at $80,000 USD per year
  • Compensation depends on factors such as location and experience

Location

  • Fully remote
  • Based in the US and authorized to work in the US

Schedule & Availability

  • No fixed or tracked hours; you set your own schedule
  • Seasonal intensity: January through mid-April and the October extension deadline are the busiest periods
  • You must remain responsive on Slack and join required team and client meetings
  • Success is measured by accurate, on-time case delivery and client satisfaction/feedback
