Overview
A leading provider of cloud-based software solutions for automotive dealerships and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) is seeking a Director of Indirect Tax. This role is responsible for overseeing all aspects of indirect tax compliance, reporting, and advisory support across multiple jurisdictions including the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico. The position requires strong technical expertise, leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate with various internal teams and external advisors to ensure accurate tax filings and compliance.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage indirect tax compliance activities, including sales tax, GST, and use tax filings across multiple jurisdictions
- Oversee preparation, review, and timely submission of indirect tax returns and related reports
- Maintain and improve internal controls, process documentation, and compliance procedures
- Conduct technical research and analyze the impact of indirect tax law changes on business operations
- Collaborate with Procurement, Accounts Payable, and Accounting teams to ensure accurate taxability determinations
- Manage configuration and maintenance of indirect tax automation systems (e.g., OneSource)
- Serve as primary liaison with external tax advisors and tax authorities
- Manage responses to tax audits, notices, and information requests
- Provide indirect tax support for business initiatives, system updates, and contract reviews
- Identify and implement tax planning opportunities to add value
- Drive process improvements and automation to increase efficiency and reduce risk
- Mentor and develop a team of two indirect tax professionals
- Monitor compliance obligations and support registration requirements in existing and new jurisdictions
- Hire, train, and manage team members, set performance goals, and provide feedback
- Ensure adherence to legal and company policies and undertake disciplinary actions if necessary
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Minimum 10 years of indirect tax experience with multi-state exposure
- Strong knowledge of sales and use tax rules applicable to technology and service-based industries
- Proven experience leading indirect tax compliance processes
- Proficiency with indirect tax automation platforms such as OneSource
- Strong analytical and technical tax skills, including research and interpretation of complex regulations
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills
- High attention to detail and ability to manage recurring deadlines
- Strong organizational and project management skills
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, CMI, JD, or Master’s degree in Taxation
- Experience with global indirect tax compliance in a SaaS environment
- Familiarity with accounting standards affecting indirect tax (e.g., ASC 450, ASC 606)
- Experience optimizing or implementing tax engines or ERP integrations
- Exposure to M&A due diligence and integration related to indirect taxes
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $195,000 - $210,000
