Overview
This role sits within Finance and owns accounting processes that keep financial records accurate, the books closed on time, and reporting ready for what’s next.
The organization runs two businesses on one engine: a vacation home marketplace and an operating system used by property managers for direct bookings, guest marketing, distribution, and payments. Money flows through both every day, including guest bookings, host payouts, subscriptions, payment processing, and a growing stack of AI products.
Responsibilities
- Own the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, including:
- Journal entries
- Accruals and prepaids
- Fixed assets
- Intercompany
- Balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare financial statements and variance analysis, ensuring the books are clean enough to answer questions quickly.
- Shorten the close each quarter by documenting the process, automating repeatable steps, and building controls to support scaling.
Revenue accounting (Marketplace and SaaS)
- Own revenue accounting across the business under ASC 606, including:
- Guest bookings and host payouts on the marketplace
- Subscriptions and usage for the operating system
- Payment processing
- Reconcile payment processor and bank activity (Stripe and partners) to the ledger, building reconciliations that remain accurate as transaction volume grows.
- Partner with Product and Engineering so new products and pricing launch with accounting already addressed, not retrofitted.
Operations: AP, AR, and payouts
- Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, expense management, and payroll journal entries with the Accounting Supervisor.
- Ensure hosts, vendors, and partners are paid correctly and on time, with appropriate reconciliation of every dollar in and out.
Audit, tax, and readiness
- Coordinate with external auditors on audit requests, workpapers, and filings; prepare for the next audit cycle.
- Support tax compliance with external tax partners, including:
- Income tax
- Sales and lodging taxes across jurisdictions
- 1099s
- Multi-state registrations
- Build the policies, controls, and documentation expected by a Series C investor and a future public company auditor.
Finance systems and automation
- Own and evolve the finance systems stack, including the general ledger, close tooling, expense/AP platforms, and integrations with product data.
- Use AI tooling to automate routine reconciliations, flux analysis, and documentation so effort focuses on high-impact work.
Communication and influence
- Translate results for the VP of Finance, the founder, and leadership: what happened, why, and what it means.
- Build high-trust relationships across Finance, Product, Engineering, Operations, and external partners.
Requirements
- 5 to 8+ years of accounting experience, including a significant track record owning a monthly close at a high-growth company (startup, marketplace, or SaaS experience strongly preferred).
- Strong ownership of the close end to end with high autonomy in high ambiguity.
- Go-to expertise for technical accounting questions for the finance team.
- CPA (or equivalent) strongly preferred; Big 4 or public accounting experience is a plus.
- Deep working knowledge of US GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition; able to research technical accounting questions and document defensible conclusions.
- Hands-on experience with a modern general ledger (NetSuite, QuickBooks Online, or similar), close and reconciliation tooling, and payment processor data (Stripe or similar).
- Advanced spreadsheet skills; SQL is a plus.
- Data-first analytical thinking with penny-level reconciliation and clear variance explanations.
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain accounting policies to engineers and founders.
- High agency in ambiguous environments; able to figure things out, document decisions, and move on.
- Demonstrated fluency with AI tooling in a finance or operations context.
- Strong drive for accuracy and accountability.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in travel, hospitality, vacation rentals, property management, or another marketplace with two-sided money movement.
- Experience with sales and lodging tax compliance across US states, or with payments and money transmission accounting.
- Experience preparing a company for its first audit, a financing, or a systems migration (e.g., QuickBooks to NetSuite).
- Prior entrepreneurial experience (running a business, founding something, or being early at a startup).

- Base salary: $100,000 to $110,000 USD per year
