Overview
An experienced Senior Sales Tax Consultant is sought to lead and deliver complex sales and use tax compliance, advisory, and process improvement services. This role involves overseeing end-to-end compliance activities, serving as the primary client advisor for assigned engagements, and collaborating closely with tax subject matter experts, technology, and operations teams to ensure scalable, audit-ready outcomes. The ideal candidate will have strong technical sales tax knowledge, client-facing experience, and the ability to mentor junior staff while driving continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary point of contact for assigned clients, managing day-to-day communications and acting as a trusted sales tax advisor.
- Interpret and respond to client inquiries.
- Proactively identify risks, issues, and opportunities; communicate recommendations clearly and professionally.
- Lead onboarding for new clients, including review of sample data, expected outputs, and compliance timelines.
- Perform and/or oversee detailed reviews of client sales data for completeness, accuracy, and conformity with jurisdictional requirements.
- Review and validate state and local jurisdictional files produced by internal sales tax solutions, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and reconciliation to source data.
- Perform high-level and detailed reconciliations of calculated tax, reported amounts, and payments.
- Confirm filing accuracy prior to submission, including schedules, attachments, and required supporting documentation.
- Investigate discrepancies, notices, and system exceptions; coordinate resolution with internal teams and clients.
- Support audits and client inquiries by preparing documentation, explanations, and reconciliations.
- Ensure adherence to internal controls, review standards, data privacy, and documentation requirements.
- Maintain and review audit-ready workpapers, checklists, and evidence of controls.
- Lead updates to process documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.
- Identify control gaps, recurring issues, and automation opportunities; partner with technology teams on enhancements.
- Support training efforts by sharing best practices, technical guidance, and process improvements.
- Prepare and review status reports, exception logs, and operational metrics for internal stakeholders and clients.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce errors, cycle time, and manual effort.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, economics, information systems, or a related field.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience.
- 5–8+ years of progressive experience in U.S. sales and use tax compliance, consulting, or a related role preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of sales and use tax concepts, including nexus, taxability, exemptions, sourcing, and registrations.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (complex formulas, lookups, pivots, data reconciliation).
- Demonstrated client-facing experience with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple engagements, meet deadlines, and prioritize work independently.
- High attention to detail with the ability to review, interpret, and challenge data and results.
- Prior experience with sales tax technology platforms and automated return preparation/filing solutions.
- Experience working in a consulting or managed services environment.
- Familiarity with Power Query, data transformation, and/or VBA automation.
- Exposure to audit support, notice resolution, and process design.
- Ability to achieve and maintain professional certifications relevant to the area of expertise.
- Analytical skills and proficient use of applicable technology.
- Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels, both internally and externally.
- Willingness and ability to travel based on client and business needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation is a plus.
