Overview
This senior individual-contributor role strengthens the organization’s tax practice by owning complex client relationships and providing advisory-level guidance. The position reports to the Tax Service Lead and serves as a steady technical reference point for the broader tax team.
In the first year, the role will take on a book of complex clients and become a go-to resource for technical guidance on topics such as multi-entity structures, election decisions, and situations requiring judgment and proactive communication. The scope and compensation are expected to grow as experience and impact increase.
Responsibilities
- Own a book of complex tax clients end-to-end, including:
- Return preparation and review
- Entity structure and tax planning conversations
- Proactive, year-round client communication (not limited to deadlines)
- Advise clients directly on entity classification, reasonable compensation, and tax-minimization strategy, including:
- Regular meetings
- Translating technical positions into plain-English guidance
- Review and troubleshoot the most complex returns before submission, including work prepared by others
- Mentor other preparers and act as a go-to resource for technical questions
- Make and own judgment calls for the assigned client book, providing candid and proactive communication and escalating the biggest decisions to the Tax Service Lead
- Reconcile and adjust client books when needed so tax-planning and preparation figures are accurate
- Partner with bookkeeping and CFO advisory teams to ensure tax considerations fit into each client’s broader financial picture
- Help lead the adoption of AI and workflow tools across the tax team, including:
- Karbon
- TaxDome
- AI-assisted research tools
- Contribute to improving each season’s quality and efficiency
Requirements
- CPA or EA license, active and in good standing
- 5+ years preparing and 3+ years reviewing individual and business tax returns, including:
- Forms 1120S, 1065, 1120, and 1040
- Experience advising clients directly on entity structure, reasonable compensation, and tax planning (not only preparing returns)
- Experience reviewing and mentoring less experienced preparers, comfortable serving as the final technical checkpoint before a return goes out
- Demonstrated track record of proactive client communication, including:
- Following up before a client has to ask
- Communicating candidly and early, even when the news is not what the client hoped to hear
- Detail-oriented approach and a service-focused mindset
- Track record of improving team workflow and quality through process improvements, tool adoption, and/or AI-enabled efficiency
- Comfortable working fully remote as part of a distributed team
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA license
- Demonstrated history of being relied on by both teammates and clients for individual-level expertise without a formal management title
- Experience in a fractional CFO, outsourced accounting, or multi-client advisory environment (vs. a single-company in-house tax role)
- Familiarity with TaxDome or comparable practice-management and workflow tools
- Comfort using AI tools as part of a research and review workflow
- Experience using AI tools such as Claude or Claude Code to support research/review and to build workflows, automations, or internal tools
