Overview

This position is responsible for assigned tax compliance duties related to state and local sales/use, fuel, excise, and miscellaneous indirect taxes. Tasks include preparation and filing of tax returns, license applications, and information reports; processing tax payments and journal entries; and handling inquiries related to company vehicles within strict guidelines. The role may also involve supporting state or local tax audits and coordinating the receipt and distribution of tax exemption documents to support tax-exempt sale or purchase transactions. The ability to learn and understand tax-specific software applications is required. Communication with company personnel, customers, or vendors to obtain tax data and transaction information may be necessary. Typically requires a high school diploma and 3+ years of experience in a business or accounting office environment preparing tax returns.

Responsibilities

  • Complete state and local tax compliance tasks including processing bills, preparing returns, maintaining files, handling correspondence, and utilizing tax-specific software applications.
  • Understand tax return filing requirements for assigned returns and obtain necessary information to complete returns timely and pay tax liabilities.
  • Tabulate mileage and fuel data for company vehicles, verify and process exemption certificates, and provide support during jurisdictional tax audits.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with tax return filings and state payment requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years experience in a business or accounting office environment.
  • Knowledge of business tax compliance required.
  • Ability to understand tax filing processes, procedures, and terminology.
  • Ability to learn tax-specific software applications and analyze data for reasonableness and accuracy.
  • Experience with Vertex tax system in both rate determination and compliance forms preferred.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Strong PC skills and experience with Microsoft Word and Outlook.
  • Detail-oriented problem solver.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a group environment.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Previous customer service experience.
  • Must be a Citizen or National of the United States, a lawful permanent resident, or have authorization to work in the United States.
