Overview
This role is for a Tax Senior Manager on a Global Tax team, reporting to the Indirect Tax Director. The focus is on managing the indirect tax compliance function across US state and local indirect taxes, Canadian and UK indirect taxes, property taxes, and other non-income tax matters. This is an individual contributor position with no direct reports and can be performed remotely within the United States.
Responsibilities
- Lead the global indirect tax accounting and compliance lifecycle, including maintaining indirect tax general ledger accounts, ensuring accurate filings, and making tax payments.
- Serve as the primary reviewer and preparer of calculations, forms, and other information related to indirect taxes such as property, sales, gross receipts, use, franchise, and digital service taxes.
- Manage global external tax service providers by providing complete and accurate information.
- Lead indirect tax audits by coordinating responses, communicating with auditors, gathering and reviewing supporting documentation, and maintaining audit files and correspondence.
- Collaborate across time zones with global stakeholders including internal teams, service providers, and tax authorities.
- Evaluate and improve existing indirect tax processes to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and scalability through better workflows, automation, or technology.
- Research indirect tax technical issues and document facts, issues, and conclusions thoroughly.
- Monitor evolving indirect tax laws and regulations, keeping stakeholders informed and processes aligned.
- Implement tax-related internal controls and maintain internal control documentation.
- Support payroll tax technical matters and create or review state income tax apportionment computations as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or advanced degree (MST/JD/LLM) preferred.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in public accounting and/or industry with significant exposure to US indirect tax compliance.
- Hands-on experience with US state and local indirect tax compliance, tax accounting, audit defense, and taxability analysis; familiarity with GST and VAT.
- Experience identifying opportunities to improve indirect tax compliance processes for greater efficiency and accuracy.
- General familiarity with US GAAP financial reporting concepts, including preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
- Strong research, analytical, and documentation skills.
- Proficiency in Excel and comfort working with large volumes of structured data.
- Familiarity with general ledger systems and tax compliance technology, including Avalara products and NetSuite.
- Ability to explain indirect tax requirements and positions to non-tax stakeholders.
Compensation & Benefits
Base pay ranges vary by location:
- Colorado: $136,400 - $225,000 annually
- Washington: $136,400 - $248,600 annually
- California: $136,400 - $272,500 annually
- New York City: $165,100 - $272,500 annually
Actual salary may vary based on geographic location, experience, qualifications, and market factors. This role is eligible for an annual bonus based on individual and company performance.
