Overview

An established public accounting firm is seeking an experienced Tax Manager to manage and grow relationships with an existing portfolio of clients, primarily focusing on physicians, medical practices, healthcare professionals, and closely held businesses. This role emphasizes client relationship management, tax planning, consulting, and problem-solving rather than high-volume tax return preparation.

Responsibilities

Client Relationship Management

  • Serve as the primary relationship manager for a portfolio of clients, with a strong concentration in medical practices and healthcare professionals.
  • Develop and maintain long-term relationships with physicians, practice owners, executives, and other key client contacts.
  • Meet regularly with clients to understand their businesses, financial objectives, challenges, and future plans.
  • Maintain ongoing communication through in-person meetings, calls, and planning sessions throughout the year.
  • Anticipate client needs proactively beyond tax compliance deadlines.
  • Coordinate with internal specialists to provide comprehensive client service.
  • Identify opportunities to expand client relationships by introducing additional services.

Tax Planning & Advisory

  • Provide proactive tax planning and strategic guidance to individuals and closely held businesses.
  • Advise clients on tax implications related to business and personal financial decisions.
  • Research and communicate solutions for complex or unusual tax matters.
  • Assist clients with IRS and state tax notices and other tax-related issues.
  • Explain tax strategies and recommendations in practical, business-oriented terms.
  • Engage in year-round planning conversations rather than limiting interaction to tax season.

Tax Compliance & Oversight

  • Review individual, business, estate, and trust tax returns.
  • Provide technical direction to staff preparing client work.
  • Review engagements for accuracy, quality, and appropriate tax treatment.
  • Manage client deadlines, budgets, workflow, and deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with the tax team to meet client expectations and commitments.

Team Leadership

  • Coach and develop tax professionals at various levels.
  • Provide clear direction regarding client expectations and engagement priorities.
  • Review staff performance and provide ongoing feedback.
  • Help team members strengthen technical tax knowledge and client-service skills.
  • Delegate compliance work effectively while maintaining responsibility for overall client service.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Taxation, Finance, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Active CPA license required.
  • 5–7+ years of progressive tax experience within public accounting.
  • At least 2 years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience working directly with physicians, medical practices, healthcare professionals, or similar closely held business clients strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of individual and business taxation.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and nurture a portfolio of client relationships.
  • Comfortable meeting with clients in person and serving as a trusted business advisor.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to build credibility with business owners and high-level professionals.
  • Ability to identify client needs beyond the immediate tax engagement.
  • Strong tax review, research, planning, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Experience supervising and developing accounting professionals.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary range: $100,000–$141,000, determined based on experience, qualifications, technical expertise, client relationship experience, and geographic location.
  • Competitive total rewards package including comprehensive benefits for eligible employees.
  • Potential discretionary bonus opportunities.
  • Professional development support.
  • Workplace flexibility including caps on busy season hours and a 9/80 work schedule.
  • 401(k) match.
