Overview
This role involves managing the tax function for a financial institution, including oversight of outsourced tax provision and compliance activities. The Tax Manager will act as an internal consultant to finance and operations teams on income tax matters, proactively identifying tax savings opportunities and mitigating tax risks.
Location: The preferred office location is listed, but other locations and remote work within the organization's footprint may be considered based on convenience and business needs.
Responsibilities
Tax Provision and Compliance
- Lead review of quarterly and annual income tax provisions
- Support federal and state income tax compliance processes, coordinating with external advisors
- Prepare and review tax workpapers and supporting documentation
- Prepare and review documentation for external auditors and SOX compliance
- Collaborate with accounting and finance teams to ensure accurate tax reporting
- Assist with process improvements and internal control enhancements within the tax function
Internal Consulting and Tax Planning
- Identify opportunities to reduce tax expenses proactively
- Assist with tax credit investing
- Support internal stakeholders on tax issues including pricing and reviewing tax-exempt lending, transaction agreements, and forecasting tax expense
- Explain tax concepts to non-tax professionals and present quarterly results to management
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field
- Minimum of 4 years of public accounting experience
- CPA or CPA-eligible with plans to obtain certification
- Solid understanding of ASC 740 and income tax compliance
- Strong technical accounting knowledge with up-to-date understanding of US GAAP and tax regulations
- Familiarity with income tax controls under Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX)
- Experience with common income tax provision software, preferably including OneSource Tax Provision
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration
- Detail-oriented with focus on accuracy and data integrity
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize in a fast-paced environment
