Overview
The organization is seeking a passionate volunteer Treasurer to serve on its Board of Directors. This officer role focuses on Board-level financial oversight, transparency, and providing clear financial insight. An outside accounting firm handles day-to-day bookkeeping, so your responsibilities center on governance, collaboration, and monitoring financial health.
- Role type: Volunteer, Officer
- Location: United States, remote
- Time commitment: maximum of 5 hours per month (typically closer to 1 hour per month)
Responsibilities
- Oversee the organization’s financial management at the Board level.
- Ensure proper records are maintained and effective financial procedures are in place.
- Monitor and report on the organization’s financial health to the Board.
- Oversee the production of financial reports, returns, accounts, and audits.
- Review and authorize U.S. state charity registration filings to ensure compliance and accuracy.
- Coordinate with the CPA on annual 990 tax returns, providing necessary information and oversight for timely submission.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to supervise the outside accounting firm that manages day-to-day bookkeeping and reporting.
- Provide strategic guidance to ensure financial decisions align with the organization’s mission and long-term sustainability.
Collaboration Model
The Treasurer is not responsible for daily bookkeeping. Instead, you will:
- Partner with the Executive Director to oversee the external accounting company.
- Ensure financial reports prepared by the outside firm are accurate, timely, and compliant.
- Serve as a liaison between the Board and the accounting team, translating financial data into clear insights for decision-making.
Qualifications
- Experience in finance, accounting, or nonprofit financial oversight preferred.
- Strong understanding of financial procedures, compliance, and reporting.
- Ability to interpret financial data and communicate clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Commitment to the organization’s mission and values.
- Prior nonprofit or board experience is a plus, but not required.
