Overview
A well-established heavy civil construction firm headquartered in Houston, TX, specializing in highways, bridges, water systems, and large-scale site development, is seeking a part-time, remote Accounts Payable Specialist. The organization has delivered over $2.8 billion in infrastructure projects across the Southern United States since 1987 and serves a broad range of public works and utility systems.
Responsibilities
- Manage the full accounts payable cycle, including invoice processing, approvals, and payment execution
- Ensure timely and accurate payments to vendors, subcontractors, and service providers
- Maintain and strengthen vendor relationships by resolving discrepancies and payment issues efficiently
- Implement and monitor internal controls to ensure compliance with company policies and regulatory requirements
- Review and approve high-value or complex invoices and payment batches
- Coordinate with procurement and project teams to validate contract terms, pricing, and payment schedules
- Reconcile vendor statements and maintain proper documentation and recordkeeping
- Support month-end and year-end close processes related to accounts payable
- Assist with audits by providing necessary documentation and responding to auditor inquiries
- Identify opportunities to improve accounts payable processes, systems, and efficiencies
- Lead, train, and mentor accounts payable staff
Requirements
- Strong foundation in accounting and finance, including understanding of basic accounting principles and accounts payable processes
- Experience reviewing and processing employee expense reports for accuracy, policy compliance, and proper coding
- Ability to prepare and review journal entries related to payables, accruals, and month-end close activities
- Demonstrated analytical skills to reconcile accounts, identify discrepancies, and support process improvements
- Proficiency with accounting or ERP software and strong spreadsheet skills (e.g., Excel or similar tools)
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple priorities in a remote work environment
- Effective written and verbal communication skills for collaboration with internal teams and external vendors
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Prior experience in construction or infrastructure industries is a plus
