Overview
A leading petroleum refining company is seeking an Assistant Derivatives Trader to support the Lead Derivatives Trader in analyzing market fundamentals and executing trading strategies. The role involves developing short- and medium-term supply and demand models to form market viewpoints, identifying risks and opportunities that impact profitability, and assisting with trade execution and monitoring.
Responsibilities
- Assist in developing market fundamental analyses (supply and demand models) to create actionable market viewpoints.
- Identify key risks and opportunities affecting profitability.
- Understand optionality related to physical trading and pricing within the refinery system.
- Support execution of trading strategies under supervision.
- Enter trades into the trading system and monitor position and profit & loss reports.
- Propose trading strategies based on market fundamentals to develop risk-taking expertise.
- Analyze large data sets using advanced Excel and Python to identify trends and opportunities.
- Act as floor trader to evaluate market movements during trading days and adjust tactics accordingly.
- Initiate and conclude less complex trades and manage price risks within delegated authority.
- Develop dashboards and back-test data sets to deliver advanced analytics models supporting trading.
- Execute financial derivatives positions to facilitate hedges across energy price risks.
- Ensure accurate trade reporting on risk reports and maintain knowledge capture systems related to market risks.
- Collaborate with supply and marketing teams to create analytical resources and support decision-making.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree with 2 years of relevant experience, or Master's degree with no experience; or 6 years of experience without a degree.
- Logical and economic thinker capable of applying analytical tools to transform data into actionable insights.
- Ability to manage multiple workload priorities.
- Exposure to physical and financial trading concepts, including pipeline and intermodal transportation, contract pricing, arbitrage, and price spreads.
- Trading experience preferred but not required.
- Strong analytical reasoning and advanced Excel skills.
- Proficiency in Python for advanced analytical problem solving.

Positions are available at refinery and terminal locations including Lake Charles, LA; Lemont, IL; and Corpus Christi, TX.
