Overview
With general direction, the Area Accountant performs accounting activities to record, analyze, and monitor financial information. This role prepares financial reports to ensure accuracy and compliance with company accounting policies. The Area Accountant may serve as a resource to accounting and general administrative staff and is responsible for a broad set of accounting duties.
Responsibilities
- Compile and analyze financial information to prepare journal entries and document business transactions.
- Prepare monthly and quarterly operational performance reports, using discretion and judgment on matters of significance.
- Assist the Area Controller with ensuring proper internal controls are in place, including compliance with company policies and procedures, Sarbanes-Oxley, and other statutory requirements, using discretion and judgment as needed.
- Reconcile balance sheet accounts and statistical data; analyze financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and company policy.
- May assist the Area Controller in managing accounting personnel and provide direction across accounting functional areas, including:
- Invoice processing
- Billing
- Cash receipts
- Work order processing
- Credit analysis
- Receivable collections
- Month-end close
- Journal entries
- Statistical data
- Payroll
- Support the Area Controller during the annual budget and interim forecasting process, including analytical review.
- Support accounting activities related to capital expenditures, transfers, and retirements.
- Assist with periodic financial audits, including internal audits, external audits, and peer reviews.
- Provide support and respond to information requests from corporate teams (accounting, tax, treasury, IT, HR, sales, environmental compliance, legal, etc.) as well as region and area field financial management as required.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned or apparent.
Qualifications
- Accounting experience.
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Intermediate MS Excel skills.
- Demonstrated ability to research and follow up on non-standard situations to ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.
- Effective and professional interpersonal communication across various levels of the organization and with external customers and vendors.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to complete projects and assignments with minimal supervision.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work effectively, cooperatively, and efficiently within a team environment.
- Experience with general ledger software and other industry-used programs.
- Experience with Oracle accounting software and other industry-used programs.
