Overview

This role builds and owns the organization’s Accounting function from the ground up (0-to-1). You will take the current setup—an outsourced bookkeeping firm, Campfire as the GL, and existing operational knowledge held by the outgoing accounting lead—and turn it into a scalable function with strong controls and audit readiness.

You will report to the Head of Finance and own the integrity of the books end to end, including close, reporting, AR/collections, AP oversight, revenue recognition, systems, and internal controls. The work includes transitioning bookkeeping and AP execution from outsourced support to in-house processes over time.

The role operates in a hybrid subscription platform revenue model alongside services revenue, creating revenue recognition that is not limited to a single, simple SaaS pattern.

Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close
    • Direct the outsourced bookkeeping relationship in the near term while migrating close, bookkeeping, and AP execution in-house
  • Prepare and ensure GAAP-compliant financial statements
    • Analyze balance sheet and P&L movements and investigate variances before they reach leadership
  • Own AR and collections
    • Invoicing, payment application, aging, and direct customer follow-up
  • Own AP oversight and vendor management
    • Approval workflows and vendor account hygiene
  • Lead complex accounting execution and judgment areas, including:
    • ASC 606 revenue recognition, contract modifications, and billing structures across subscription and services revenue
  • Own core finance systems and integrations
    • Campfire (GL/AR/AP), Carta (equity), and the billing/payment stack, including the integration roadmap between them
  • Build and document accounting processes, approval workflows, documentation, and internal controls
    • Replace ad hoc handling with repeatable processes that a new hire or external auditor can follow
  • Review customer and vendor contracts to identify accounting, billing, and revenue recognition implications
  • Own equity administration
    • Option grant processing, cap table accuracy, and coordination with legal and the cap table system
  • Support treasury
    • Cash positioning, inter-account transfers, and forecasting cash needs alongside the Head of Finance
  • Coordinate tax and compliance activities with external tax and legal advisors
    • Including multi-state filings and notices
  • Partner with People Ops on payroll accounting, compensation changes, and compliance alongside the PEO
  • Prepare monthly reporting packages for the lender and investors
  • Build audit-readiness capabilities
    • Documentation and controls that withstand external auditor questions

Requirements

  • Prior experience as a Controller, or strong Assistant Controller / Accounting Manager experience ready to run the function independently
    • Ideally in a high-growth Series A SaaS environment
  • Experience building or materially maturing an accounting function
    • Comfortable with 0-to-1 work: creating processes, controls, and documentation
  • Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, including ASC 606 revenue recognition for subscription and services revenue
    • Ability to reason through nonstandard revenue scenarios
  • AI-forward approach
    • Use AI tools daily to accelerate close, reconciliations, and reporting
    • Strong point of view on automation in accounting workflows
  • Ability to own the close independently
    • Run the process without a controller above catching mistakes
  • Business-partner mindset
    • Translate customer contracts, compensation changes, and operational decisions into accounting and cash implications
  • Clear and direct communication
    • Explain judgment calls to non-finance stakeholders and defend decisions if challenged
  • Self-directed and comfortable with ambiguity in a remote, async, high-autonomy environment
    • No fully scoped processes provided in advance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Campfire or a comparable modern GL (e.g., Ramp, Rippling, NetSuite)
  • Experience building an accounting function from the ground up at a startup
  • Experience with a hybrid subscription + services revenue model
  • Experience insourcing an accounting function previously handled externally
    • Including transitioning off an outside bookkeeping firm
  • Experience with a first audit or an initial institutional financing round
    • Understanding what that level of scrutiny requires
