Overview

This role involves leading the end-to-end budget execution process for several key functions within a Research & Development organization focused on biotech and pharmaceutical innovation. The position supports leaders in making timely, data-informed decisions that enable innovation across therapeutic areas including oncology, inflammation, general medicine, and rare diseases.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual budget planning cycle, including intake, challenge/validation, scenario analysis, and preparation of executive-ready presentations
  • Maintain budget plans with disciplined governance; reconcile actuals versus plan and translate drivers into actionable insights
  • Manage capital expense plans through forecasting, funding alignment, and lifecycle tracking
  • Own quarterly forecast updates and close activities, ensuring accuracy and alignment with evolving business priorities
  • Collaborate with global teams to deliver integrated budget execution support with shared standards and continuous improvement
  • Coordinate and deliver recurring leadership updates with clear narratives, risks/opportunities, and decision points
  • Optimize dashboards and data products to provide near-real-time visibility and actionable metrics for leaders
  • Provide analytical support on spend, capacity/resource utilization, and variances; identify trends and recommend interventions
  • Support productivity initiatives and business case development, including benefits realization and KPI design
  • Provide expert budget execution support across the procure-to-pay process; resolve escalations, strengthen controls, and improve cycle time

Requirements

  • Education and experience options (choose one):
    • Doctorate degree
    • Master's degree plus 3 years of biotech/pharma business operations and/or financial analytics experience
    • Bachelor's degree plus 5 years of biotech/pharma business operations and/or financial analytics experience
    • Associate's degree plus 10 years of biotech/pharma business operations and/or financial analytics experience
    • High school diploma/GED plus 12 years of biotech/pharma business operations and/or financial analytics experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in business, finance, life sciences, or related field
  • Experience in financial reporting, forecasting, and variance/root-cause analysis
  • Familiarity with drug development processes and how R&D organizations translate strategy into portfolios and investment decisions
  • Proficiency with data visualization and collaboration tools (e.g., Tableau, Smartsheet, MS Teams)
  • Advanced Excel skills and strong command of Microsoft Office suite
  • Experience leveraging automation and AI-enabled solutions to streamline workflows and improve controls
  • Experience with enterprise planning/procurement tools (e.g., SAP, Ariba, Anaplan)
  • Ability to analyze detailed information and translate complex data into clear, decision-grade insights
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex, matrixed environment; collaborate across levels; influence without authority; manage multiple priorities
  • Exceptional communication skills with ability to craft concise narratives and deliver messages that enable alignment and change
  • Strong relationship-building skills with a customer-service orientation and collaborative problem-solving approach
  • Proactive self-starter with curiosity and a continuous improvement mindset
