Overview

This role involves owning U.S. accounting operations end-to-end, including the general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, fixed assets, inventory accounting, payroll accounting, tax compliance, and the financial close. The Controller will be the primary owner of financial reporting integrity across the function and will operate as a hands-on leader—setting technical accounting standards while also doing the detailed work when needed.

The accounting function is small and fast-moving, supported by an internal accounting team and a network of outside contractors for specific sub-functions (e.g., bookkeeping support, payroll, tax preparation). A core expectation of the role is modernizing accounting workflows using AI tools to compress close timelines, automate reconciliations, flag anomalies, and produce cleaner reporting faster.

Responsibilities

Financial Reporting & Accounting Operations

  • Lead all U.S. accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets, and inventory accounting across direct-to-consumer, wholesale, and marketplace channels (e.g., Amazon).
  • Direct monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes to ensure timely and accurate reporting, including revenue recognition, accruals, and reconciliations.
  • Own consolidated financial reporting and reconciliation processes; ensure integrity, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Ensure financial statements are prepared in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Develop, maintain, and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, documentation, and internal controls to support growth and scalability.

Inventory & Costing

  • Ensure accuracy of inventory balances, cost structures, inventory reserves, and landed costs across supplier and vendor base.
  • Partner with Supply Chain and Operations to strengthen inventory controls, improve reporting accuracy, and support operational decision-making.
  • Analyze cost variances, landed costs, and margin performance to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Drive continuous improvement in costing methodologies and inventory-related financial controls.

Payroll Administration & Accounting

  • Manage payroll accounting, including reconciliations, benefit deductions, commissions, bonuses, and equity compensation accounting where applicable.
  • Partner with People & Culture and a PEO to ensure payroll processes, systems, and controls support growth and compliance requirements.

Tax Compliance & Regulatory Reporting

  • Oversee U.S. tax accounting activities, including sales and use tax, payroll tax, income tax support, property tax, and business licensing.
  • Coordinate annual tax provisions and support outside tax advisors and consultants.
  • Ensure timely completion of payroll tax filings, indirect tax filings, and other regulatory reporting requirements.

Audit, Compliance & Internal Controls

  • Lead annual financial statement audits or reviews, coordinating preparation, documentation, and communication with external auditors.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal control frameworks to ensure financial accuracy, compliance, and operational effectiveness.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that enhance efficiency, transparency, and financial governance.

AI-Enabled Process Efficiency

  • Identify and implement AI and automation tools to compress close timelines, speed up reconciliations, flag exceptions, and reduce manual, repetitive accounting work.

Outside Contractor & Vendor Management

  • Direct and evaluate outsourced or contracted sub-functions (bookkeeping support, payroll, tax preparation, sales tax filings, and similar), including setting expectations, reviewing deliverables for accuracy, and holding vendors accountable to deadlines and quality.
  • Manage relationships with external auditors, tax advisors, and other third-party financial partners.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the internal accounting team, setting clear performance expectations, accountability standards, and development plans.
  • Partner with the COO/CFO and executive leadership to provide financial insights and strategic support.
  • Build a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement, and construct scalable processes and team structures to support growth without proportionally scaling headcount.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Partner with Operations, Supply Chain, People & Culture, Commercial leaders, and executive leadership to support business objectives and informed decision-making.
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial audiences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Active CPA required.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership.
  • 4+ years leading, mentoring, and developing accounting team members.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA, CMA, or CGMA.
  • Equivalent combination of education, certification, and accounting leadership experience.
  • Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Senior Accounting Manager.
  • Experience managing external financial statement audits, tax advisors, and other third-party financial partners, including outsourced or contracted accounting sub-functions.
  • Prior experience in consumer products, DTC/e-commerce, or apparel; familiarity with multi-channel and marketplace revenue (e.g., Amazon).
  • Demonstrated hands-on comfort operating in a small or lean team, doing detailed work personally rather than only reviewing others’ output.
  • Concrete, demonstrated experience using AI tools (e.g., for reconciliations, anomaly detection, reporting, or process automation) to increase accounting team leverage and efficiency.

Technical Skills & Core Competencies

  • Expert knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting standards, payroll accounting, and related tax and compliance requirements.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to evaluate data, identify trends, mitigate risk, and provide actionable insight.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain confidentiality, and thrive in a fast-paced, growing environment.
