Controller

Overview

This role is for a Controller with a technology-driven financial services company. The position is hands-on and oversees the full accounting function, including financial reporting, cash management, payroll, monthly close, and regulatory compliance. Reporting directly to the CEO, the Controller will take ownership of accounting operations in a lean, entrepreneurial environment.

Location

Jersey City, NJ OR remote, working 9-6pm Eastern time zone.

Responsibilities

• Manage day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, bank reconciliations, cash management, payroll, and monthly close.
• Maintain accurate financial records in QuickBooks and deliver timely financial statements to the CEO.
• Oversee sales tax filings, regulatory compliance, and ongoing audit readiness.
• Manage accounting for software development cost capitalization, deferred revenue, accruals, and one-time adjustments.
• Reconcile financial results against budget, identify variances, and provide actionable reporting.
• Establish accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
• Coordinate with external tax and audit advisors and support financial due diligence activities.

Requirements (Ideal Background)

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA strongly preferred.
• Experience independently managing accounting operations within a small technology, software, or services company.
• Strong knowledge of US GAAP, QuickBooks, monthly close, payroll, and cash management.
• Experience with software accounting, development-cost capitalization, and multi-state sales tax compliance.
• Familiarity with expense management platforms such as Ramp.
• Prior M&A or financial due diligence experience is a plus.
• Highly organized, detail-oriented, and comfortable working independently in a hands-on accounting role.

Compensation & Benefits

• $180K base + $20K bonus target, based on experience.
