This role is responsible for overseeing, developing, and evaluating entity Controllers and ensuring accurate, consistent, and timely financial reporting across every operating entity.

Reports to: Chief Financial Officer

Location: Milwaukee preferred; remote candidates are expected on-site in Milwaukee monthly to every other month

Travel: 30% to 40% (operating entities, newly acquired companies, and the Milwaukee corporate office; heaviest during acquisitions and Controller transitions)

Compensation: Competitive base salary, bonus, healthcare, and other total rewards

Responsibilities

Controller Leadership & Development

  • Lead and provide solid-line leadership, coaching, and performance management for entity Controllers (each covering one to three operating entities), ensuring consistent accounting policy, controls, and best practices across all entities.
  • Coach through work variances by partnering with Controllers on problem entities until they can identify and resolve issues independently.
  • Decide entity-by-entity whether a Controller is ready for elevation or needs additional support, coordinating changes with the CFO and business unit leaders.
  • Recruit, build, and develop a scalable pipeline of accounting leadership talent, including regional Controller roles covering several entities.
  • Ensure each entity’s financial results arrive explained—moving Controllers from reporting numbers to explaining what drove margin and project performance.

Close, Consolidation & Financial Reporting

  • Directly own accounting, financial reporting, and month-end close for the corporate entity (parent and holding company).
  • Own close timing across all entities through consolidation; bring slower entities in line with best performers and maintain a disciplined close calendar as new entities join.
  • Partner with FP&A on monthly consolidation to ensure accurate roll-up to consolidated financial statements, board and lender reporting, budgets, and forecasts.
  • Ensure receipts and AR data feeding the weekly cash forecast are vetted and reliable.
  • Lead the annual consolidated audit as the primary liaison to external auditors, coordinating entity-level requests through the Controller team and maintaining an audit-ready platform throughout the year.

Project Accounting, Controls & Compliance

  • Review entity WIP monthly against prior periods and billings against cost flow; isolate projects behind any margin swing and teach Controllers to perform the same analysis before results reach the CFO.
  • Serve as the point of escalation for complex, judgmental accounting matters across entities, including revenue recognition and contract/percentage-of-completion accounting, as well as tax-related items.
  • Establish, standardize, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls across all operating entities with an emphasis on consistency, efficiency, and delegation.
  • Monitor entity-level and consolidated KPIs, WIP reporting, and cash signals; escalate trends, risks, and opportunities to the CFO.
  • Act on collections when receipts lag and ensure compliance with GAAP and all applicable local, state, and federal reporting and tax requirements.

Shared Services, Systems & Continuous Improvement

  • Design, implement, and oversee centralized financial services supporting all operating entities, including accounts payable, customer invoicing, collections, and purchasing—structured for cross-entity support without requiring a single physical location.
  • Treat regional roll-ups as meaningful progress while sequencing work in a sensible order before expanding centralized activity.
  • Understand how job data flows from the ERP into payroll; serve as a resource to HR (which processes payroll) and resolve job-costing errors with entities when they occur.
  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting processes, systems, and controls so the platform scales efficiently as entities are added, including practical use of analytics and AI tools to speed diagnosis and reporting.
  • Represent the accounting function on cross-functional projects (e.g., regional reporting structure and systems initiatives) alongside the CFO, FP&A, and Finance Systems teams.
  • Take on additional controller duties as the platform evolves.

Acquisition Accounting & Integration

  • Own the accounting workstream for each new acquisition after close, including the opening balance sheet and purchase accounting under ASC 805, coordinating purchase price allocation with the deal team and outside valuation specialists, and delivering an audit-ready file.
  • Lead accounting integration for newly acquired entities onto the platform’s chart of accounts, accounting policies, systems, and close calendar in partnership with the Finance Systems team, a regional Controller, and the finance integration lead responsible for local ERP conversion.
  • Hold integration go-live dates, spot local decisions that could create problems later, raise issues before go-live, and step in directly only when an integration needs it.
  • Support financial due diligence requests on prospective acquisitions as needed; diligence itself is led by the sponsor and outside advisors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
  • Fifteen or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including leadership of accounting teams across multiple business units, divisions, or legal entities.
  • Prior experience as a Corporate Controller, VP Controller, or similar multi-entity oversight role at a company of at least $150 million in revenue (ideally $150 million to $300 million).
  • Experience in a rapidly growing, acquisitive, private equity-backed platform, including understanding how a sponsor and its lenders read the financials.
  • Multi-entity, multi-state oversight experience (ideally across five or more entities); single-entity experience does not translate.
  • Required construction accounting experience, including percentage-of-completion and contract accounting, plus hands-on WIP analysis in a project-based business with long project cycles. Specialty contractor, MEP, and similar backgrounds are welcome.
  • Demonstrated experience building or centralizing shared accounting services across multiple entities.
  • Experience with opening balance sheets, purchase accounting (ASC 805), and post-acquisition integration strongly preferred.
  • Experience leading ERP conversions or system integrations across multiple entities; Acumatica experience is a plus.
  • Depth in multi-entity close, consolidation, and consolidated audit, with strong command of GAAP.
  • Hands-on experience in organizations without a deep bench, including running an entity’s close personally when needed; careers spent only inside large public companies typically do not translate.
  • Proven track record recruiting, developing, and leading accounting leaders and teams, including people promoted into larger roles.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to influence, align, and drive change across a decentralized, growing organization.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • A servant-leadership style built on transparency, teamwork, humility, and discipline, with the ability to listen, guide, and keep confidences, and strong analytical problem-solving.
  • Alignment with the organization’s leadership principles: Strong Professional Fortitude; Strive for Win/Win; Execute with Structure & Discipline; Seek Alignment & Fit; Assist; Lead by Example; Focus on Change.
  • Willingness to travel 30% to 40% to operating entities, newly acquired companies, and the Milwaukee corporate office; Milwaukee-based preferred.
