Overview
A leading academic medical department is seeking a Financial Analyst 3 to perform complex financial functions and activities with programmatic impact. This role requires professional expertise in applying internal policies, systems, and external regulations to manage a diverse portfolio of complex federal and non-federal sponsored research projects involving multiple sub-awards, principal investigators, and cross-school initiatives. The position also involves collaboration on special projects and ad hoc financial reporting.
Responsibilities
- Act as liaison and active partner between principal investigators, Office of Sponsored Research, research groups, and other departments; respond to sponsor inquiries.
- Collaborate with the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure proper award setup and fulfillment of cost-sharing requirements; initiate cost transfers.
- Oversee and lead a team of finance analysts, providing direction and training.
- Collect data and perform transaction research; generate, review, analyze, and communicate financial data reflecting actual performance against budgets.
- Capture, track, and report revenue and expenses; determine appropriate procedures for financial record preparation, transaction research, and reporting.
- Oversee, reconcile, and resolve issues related to complex accounts.
- Manage contract closeout processes and audit inquiries; submit final reports and certificates.
- Develop, maintain, and review process controls; recommend and implement approved modifications.
- Review, design, and implement internal control programs; research new regulations and implement approved changes.
- Manage compliance programs within area of responsibility; interpret internal policies and external regulations; create and review complex compliance reports.
- Run and analyze complex financial reports from multiple systems; prepare management information reports.
- Identify and implement process improvements; participate in unit projects.
- Serve as a resource to principal investigators and staff.
- Collaborate with department administration on special projects involving ad hoc financial reports and analysis.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Core Duties
- Perform highly analytical, complex finance and control functions including multi-dimensional reconciliations and approval of complex transactions.
- Research and synthesize large data sets; identify trends, draw conclusions, develop solutions, and present recommendations.
- Develop complex budgets, forecasting scenarios, long-range planning, and financial analyses.
- Identify and resolve unique issues with substantial significance; recommend policy changes or new processes.
- Lead and execute unit or cross-functional projects and teams; make decisions affecting operational effectiveness.
- Continuously analyze existing systems and processes; recommend improvements for efficiency and internal controls.
- Define requirements, develop and implement test cases, perform testing, and analyze results.
- Lead and support organizational strategy and change management initiatives.
- Provide training on new financial systems.
- Represent the organization to client groups and external partners as a subject matter expert.
- Assess client and business needs; formulate recommendations for managing and completing processes.
- May supervise, train, coach, and review work of other staff as needed.
Minimum Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree and six years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Advanced proficiency in business applications, especially Microsoft Excel.
- Advanced knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and financial systems.
- Strong internet and computer literacy.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Advanced professional communication skills, including preparing materials and effectively communicating with internal and external audiences.
- Strong project management skills with ability to contribute to or lead multi-functional teams.
