Overview
A rapidly growing AI research and product company is seeking a dedicated Indirect Tax Specialist to manage all aspects of indirect tax compliance globally. The organization serves millions of users and thousands of businesses worldwide, operating across more than 40 jurisdictions with a complex and expanding indirect tax footprint.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end indirect tax compliance including filings, payments, reconciliations, journal entries, exemption certificates, and audits.
- Maintain and configure tax codes within billing platforms such as Stripe.
- Prepare for e-invoicing mandates and establish compliance in new markets as the company registers in additional jurisdictions.
- Serve as the primary expert on indirect tax matters, collaborating with Finance, Legal, and Product teams on product taxability, invoicing requirements, and customer tax inquiries.
Requirements
- Deep expertise in US sales and use tax, including multi-state compliance, nexus analysis, product taxability, exemption certificates, and audit defense, preferably with digital products, SaaS, or electronically supplied services.
- Working knowledge of international VAT/GST compliance and ability to manage global filings alongside external advisors.
- Proven experience managing the full indirect tax compliance cycle across multiple jurisdictions.
- Strong systems and data skills, with experience using billing platforms or tax engines such as Stripe Tax, Avalara, or Vertex, and improving processes through automation.
- Ability to operate autonomously in a fast-paced environment as the sole indirect tax owner.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with US indirect tax audits (state sales tax or gross receipts).
- Familiarity with e-invoicing mandates and digital services tax (DST) regimes.
- Experience implementing tax engines or supporting new market launches.
