Overview

This position supports the employer’s National Tax practice, specifically the National Tax Group. The organization is seeking a highly motivated, analytical, and experienced Tax Controversy professional to join the team.

As a Tax Controversy Manager, you will assist clients in responding to IRS and state tax matters with the goal of resolving matters as favorably as possible. This role will be part of a new National Tax team and reports directly to the Head of Tax Controversy and Risk.

Responsibilities

  • Represent clients in IRS and other authorities’ tax controversy matters, including interaction with clients, engagement team members, and IRS/state personnel
  • Research complex federal and state tax topics and draft and/or review technical memoranda and tax alerts
  • Ensure timely handling and identification of technical topics for training tax team members
  • Assist client teams with complex transactions to identify risk areas prior to execution
  • Assist clients and engagement teams in identifying potential risk areas
  • Support internal and external presentations
  • Serve as a tax technical resource to the Tax practice
  • Assist in reviewing and enhancing tax policies and procedures to enhance quality and reduce risk

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • CPA, EA, JD, or LLM preferred
  • 6+ years of broad, relevant experience in tax compliance, tax accounting, or tax consulting
  • Strong technical skills in tax concepts and rules
  • Good analytical skills and attention to detail
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills and intuition
  • Team player with the ability to work effectively and independently with guidance in an environment of deadlines and concurrent projects
  • Proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and various tax research tools

Preferred Qualifications

  • IRS or solid tax controversy experience
