Remote · US Full Time
Est. $85K – $115K/yr

Overview

This role oversees payroll onboarding implementation for partner employers and evolves into training and enablement for partner teams.

  • Full-time
  • Remote (US)
  • Start ASAP

Responsibilities

Hands-on employer onboarding

  • Onboard new employers end to end, including company setup; federal, state, and local tax accounts and rates; pay schedules; earning and deduction codes; garnishments; benefits; and worker records
  • Move settings and deductions from the employer’s prior provider and confirm they are configured correctly
  • Coordinate with the migration team to ensure each account’s configuration and migrated data are ready together for the first payroll
  • Audit builds before go-live and catch configuration errors before they reach a paycheck
  • Manage a pipeline of onboardings toward clear go-live dates, chasing down missing items from employers and partners (tax IDs, registration letters, prior-provider reports)
  • Work directly with employers via Zoom, phone, or email to guide setup and first payrolls
  • Identify where setup help ends and tax or legal advice begins, and route questions to the appropriate place

Training and enablement

  • Design and deliver training programs to teach partner teams how to onboard employers onto payroll
  • Create training materials, exercises, and job aids across different learning modalities (live sessions, recorded walkthroughs, written guides, hands-on practice, and knowledge checks)
  • Explain payroll concepts in plain terms for people new to payroll and confirm learning retention
  • Train partner onboarding and support teams and coach them through their first months of live employers
  • Review partner-built accounts, identify patterns in mistakes, and update training materials or processes accordingly

Improving the onboarding model

  • Turn what works across partners and employers into standardized payroll onboarding guidance and playbooks
  • Keep training materials current as the product, processes, and payroll rules change
  • Identify recurring onboarding failures, provide specifics to product and engineering, and help automate items that should be automated

Requirements

  • 5 to 7 years in payroll operations or onboarding, including 2 to 3 years training, coaching, or educating people in the payroll operations domain
  • Experience at a payroll provider
  • Experience creating training materials and building training programs from scratch
  • Experience educating people new to payroll and making complex payroll concepts simple and practical
  • Proven ability to develop engaging training materials, exercises, and learning modalities that people actually use
  • Hands-on payroll onboarding or implementation experience, with a willingness to do the work directly
  • Strong working knowledge of multi-state payroll tax, pre- and post-tax deductions, benefits and retirement (including 401(k)), and garnishments
  • Experience resolving payroll issues directly with employers (PTO, 401(k), deductions, garnishments, W-4s, and tax discrepancies)
  • Strong attention to accuracy; a payroll that is a few cents off is unacceptable without finding the cause
  • Comfortable working with spreadsheets, including reviewing and uploading YTD balances and mapping settings and deduction data from other providers’ reports
  • Clear, patient communication via Zoom, phone, and email
  • Ability to run multiple onboarding and training efforts at once using a ticketing and tracking system (Zendesk, Slack, and Google Workspace)
  • Comfortable with the “startup version” of the role: less structure, more ownership, and building the process while performing the work

Preferred Qualifications

  • Train-the-trainer experience (taught other trainers or team leads how to teach)
  • Experience with employers of 100+ workers or multi-state employers
  • Comfort presenting to partner leadership and explaining what strong onboarding requires

Location
