Overview
A Project Accountant role is available with the organization. This position may be performed remotely; California preferred.
Compensation: $70,000 - $80,000 annually (negotiable based on experience)
This role supports project financial health by managing budgets, tracking expenses, analyzing financial performance, and ensuring accurate reporting and compliance with financial standards.
Responsibilities
- Review project contracts to understand financial obligations and ensure compliance with contractual terms.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date project data in accounting systems.
- Support proposal and cost-estimating activities.
- Support project managers and the accounting team with project management schedules.
- Provide timely project performance data to project managers and relevant departments (e.g., Contracting and Accounting).
- Proactively escalate issues requiring immediate attention.
- Update and maintain the project database; generate standard and special reports for project managers and senior management.
- Perform a variety of tasks in support of contracts, clients, project managers, and others.
- Prepare client invoices according to contract-specific requirements, including labor detail by staff level, required backup, client portal submission, and pre-authorization for out-of-scope work.
- Review subconsultant and subcontractor invoices against agreement terms, rate tables, and period of performance.
- Monitor unbilled amounts, WIP, and aged AR; support collections and document write-off requests.
- Track budget-to-actual variance, maintain EAC/ETC, and drive resolution with PMs on overbudget projects.
- Provide guidance on PMO processes.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
- 2+ years of experience in a prior Project Accountant or Cost Accountant role.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance and/or equivalent experience.
- Prior experience analyzing project costs and budgets.
- Understanding of Revenue Recognition Rules.
- Team player with strong work ethic and self-initiation.
- Excellent organization, time management, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite (strong Excel skills and ability to pivot data).
- Strong task ownership, follow-through, and attention to detail.
- Ability to prioritize tasks effectively and manage several projects simultaneously.
- Strong initiative; able to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Desire to learn new skills and grow professionally.
Preferred Qualifications
- Project accounting software experience (e.g., Deltek VantagePoint, Deltek Vision, Jamis, Sage).
