Overview

A scientific research institute is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst for a six-month contract role within its Office of Finance. This position involves managing the financial aspects of a portfolio of research projects, including billing, financial analysis, and risk assessment. There is a possibility of conversion to a full-time role based on performance, organizational needs, and funding, but this is not guaranteed.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct ongoing financial analysis of projects, including profitability analysis, cost forecasting, and variance and fee deviation analysis
  • Review actual costs for accuracy and proper charging, review invoices, and support payment approvals
  • Perform monthly revenue recognition reviews, identify causes of deviations, and recommend corrective actions
  • Ensure monthly project reviews and communicate financial status summaries to project leaders
  • Provide guidance to project leaders and management on potential changes in statements of work requiring budget revisions
  • Prepare monthly progress reports including project forecasts and resource projections for clients
  • Support preparation of continuation applications, carryover fund budgets, and add-on budgets
  • Review initial project authorizations and setup for accuracy, and seek guidance on contract terms and conditions
  • Lead assigned process improvement initiatives with a high degree of responsibility

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance with 6+ years of financial analysis experience, or
  • Master’s degree with at least 1 year of financial analysis experience
  • Strong understanding of indirect rates and various contract types
  • Ability to handle ambiguity in business modeling
  • Experience as a trusted partner to management teams
  • Experience working in a matrixed organization
  • Proficiency with MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and advanced Excel skills
  • Familiarity with accounting systems is a plus
  • Knowledge of US Government contractors, Federal Acquisition Regulations, and Oracle for project reporting and billing is a plus
  • Ability to obtain required security clearances as noted by contracts
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without current or future need for visa sponsorship

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working closely with research staff on financial project management
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects autonomously
  • Strong initiative and resourcefulness in problem-solving
