Overview
This role supports the organization’s US Indirect Tax Controversy function by executing a portfolio of US indirect tax audits, including sales and use tax, gross receipts taxes, property taxes, and business license taxes. The position involves owning the audit management process, reporting on audit status, and coordinating cross-functional channels that supply the facts, data, and documents needed for audit defense.
You will report to the leader of the US Indirect Tax Controversy function and work alongside a Manager who manages audits and an Associate Manager who owns the team’s data and analytics. Remote work is available for candidates based within the US, with limited travel for team events, offsites, and select audit meetings.
The organization expects this position to be filled by 11/30/2026.
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end execution across the full US indirect tax audit portfolio, directing how audits are staffed across sales and use tax, gross receipts tax, property tax, and business license taxes; personally manage a select set of audits.
- Build and maintain audit portfolio visibility by designing and sustaining trackers, cadences, and metrics that translate concurrent audits into clear exposure reporting by issue, aging, status, and outcomes, working alongside the data/analytics and Tax Tech teams.
- Develop cross-functional channels to quickly secure audit defense inputs across Tax Compliance, Tax Tech, Accounting, Planning, and Operations.
- Resolve tax controversies by setting defense strategy, negotiating with state and local auditors, and driving matters to resolution; escalate with a clear recommendation when appropriate.
- Surface high-impact audit issues early, including matters affecting current planning, carrying significant value, or drawing senior visibility; provide the analysis needed for decision-making.
- Serve as a senior voice on the team by mentoring a Manager and an Associate Manager, reviewing their work, setting standards for audit execution, and expanding expertise across tax types and jurisdictions.
Requirements
- 8+ years of professional experience in state and local tax audits, controversy, or compliance, including experience in a Big 4 or consulting firm indirect tax practice, a state or local revenue agency, or an in-house corporate tax function with meaningful indirect tax operations.
- Experience managing audits end to end with state and local auditors, including information document requests, sampling methodologies, workpaper negotiation, and settlement discussions.
- Demonstrated process ownership, including building and sustaining trackers, cadences, or reporting packages that others used as part of an ongoing function.
- Ability to defend unsettled positions, including explaining how you decided how to proceed when the law was unclear and facts were incomplete.
- Strong understanding of sales and use taxes, including marketplace facilitator laws.
- Experience with US gross receipts taxes (e.g., Washington B&O, San Francisco GRT), property taxes, or business license taxes is strongly preferred.
- Resourcefulness and persistence in obtaining audit needs from business owners and systems of record.
- Enthusiasm for using modern AI tools in a professional context.
- Strong moral compass and compassion for others.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
- CPA, CMI, MST, or equivalent credential is a plus.
