Overview

This role applies state and local tax (SALT) knowledge to support state and local tax audits, inform tax decisions, identify tax planning opportunities and risks, and implement tax planning. Responsibilities include researching state tax issues to determine the most advantageous and proper treatment under applicable tax law, documenting analysis and conclusions, and drafting state and local tax memoranda.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate and resolve technical state tax issues related to tax returns, planning strategies, and examinations by state tax authorities; gather data, formulate position statements, and coordinate or negotiate during audits.
  • Assist with the implementation of complex state tax planning strategies, addressing a broad range of related issues to identify opportunities to minimize the organization’s state tax burden.
  • Review tax workpapers, schedules, reports, and correspondence, as well as state tax returns and payments, to ensure compliance and proper accounting for state income taxes.
  • Research complex state tax matters to determine the most appropriate and advantageous treatment under applicable laws, including preparation of supporting memoranda (e.g., ASC 740).
  • Stay abreast of state and local tax developments and inform team members of relevant changes.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
  • 3 years of experience in state sales/use and/or income/franchise tax consulting and planning, or 4 years of overall experience including 2 years with a large public accounting or tax consulting firm in a similar role.
  • Ability to gather data, formulate position statements, and coordinate or negotiate with respect to examinations by state tax authorities.
  • In-depth knowledge of state tax laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Excellent research, analysis, and writing/verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision.
  • Proven ability to collaborate and foster relationships within the Tax team and with key functions such as Accounting, FP&A, Legal, and Treasury.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising administrative personnel and interns in alignment with organizational needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
  • Big-4 experience or large CPA firm experience.
