Overview

This role leads the billing function, reporting to the SVP, Corporate Controller, and serves as a day-to-day partner on billing matters. The position owns billing timeliness and accuracy across all customers, products, and billing models, clears the unbilled backlog, and leads a team of roughly 20 people. This is a build and transformation role—there is no defined billing cadence today, significant billing problems and technical debt exist, and cross-system reconciliation issues require sustained remediation.

Responsibilities

  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for the billing team, including:
    • Invoice timeliness (days from billable event to invoice)
    • Billing accuracy and error/rework rate
    • Aged unbilled balance and aging
    • On-time billing percentage
    • Credit-memo and rebill volume
    • Backlog burn-down
  • Stand up dashboards and a weekly reporting cadence visible to the team, Finance leadership, and the business.
  • Manage the team to measurable results:
    • Set individual targets
    • Hold regular one-on-one meetings
    • Conduct data-grounded performance reviews
    • Define consequences and rewards tied to results to prevent delays/errors from being discovered after invoices are already wrong
  • Create and institutionalize end-to-end process documentation and standard operating procedures for a defined billing cadence, covering every billing model, including:
    • Fulfillment-driven
    • Contract and schedule-driven
    • BluLogix
    • State contracts
  • Define and maintain a billing calendar and control framework so invoicing follows documented contract terms and schedules rather than tribal knowledge or fulfillment status.
  • Take ownership of a significant backlog of unbilled amounts and ensure customer billings are reflected in NetSuite (billing cannot run in advance of fulfillment), driving the backlog down and preventing it from rebuilding.
  • Own billing timeliness and accuracy across all customers, products, and billing models, and build a strategy to reduce aged unbilled while sustaining improvement.
  • Own the exception and dispute workflow, defining how billing errors, holds, and disputed invoices are routed, tracked, corrected, and escalated to ensure resolution once rather than repeated follow-up.
  • Lead, develop, and set direction for the billing team of roughly 20 (including two direct reports):
    • Create clear ownership and expectations
    • Coach and address performance gaps
    • Build depth so billing runs reliably without heroics or single points of failure
  • Assess whether staffing levels and roles are aligned to current needs, and make structural/role/headcount changes as required.
  • Partner with Business Operations, Sales, Sales Operations, Credit, and IT and Systems to fix upstream root causes, including:
    • Order setup
    • Fulfillment accuracy
    • Contract terms
    • SKU governance
    • System configuration
  • Lead improvements to reduce manual workarounds by shifting to contract-term-driven billing schedules in NetSuite.
  • Work with Finance IT to untangle technical debt, integration gaps, and data-flow issues across NetSuite, Salesforce, and BluLogix, including:
    • Fulfillment gating of non-equipment billing
    • SKU mismatches
    • Unreliable NetSuite to BluLogix synchronization
    • Sequencing fixes into a realistic, achievable roadmap
  • Personally manage the largest, most complex accounts and toughest billing exceptions, including difficult reconciliations and customer-facing billing conversations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Comply with all policies and standards.
  • Demonstrate comfort adopting emerging AI tools and technologies to optimize processes, improve collaboration, and drive operational effectiveness.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business, or equivalent related experience.
  • 10+ years in B2B billing or order-to-cash, including 5+ years leading billing teams and experience managing through supervisors or managers.
  • Experience leading billing at a company of comparable scale (roughly $500M+ in revenue), multi-entity, with high invoice volume and contract complexity.
  • Demonstrated success building or turning around a billing operation and improving billing timeliness, accuracy, and aged unbilled.
  • Experience as a core stakeholder in an ERP or billing-system implementation, migration, or major process re-engineering.
  • Experience in technology, IT services, telecom, or a comparable B2B services environment; multi-subsidiary billing, M&A, and systems-integration experience preferred.
  • Proven success building performance-management frameworks, key performance indicators, and reporting, with a data-driven instinct to hold self and others accountable.
  • Proven ability to author and institutionalize process documentation, standard operating procedures, and billing-cadence controls.
  • Controllership fluency, including how billing drives revenue recognition under ASC 606, deferred revenue, unbilled accounts receivable, month-end close, external audit, and SOX-grade controls.
  • Hands-on proficiency with NetSuite and billing platforms including BluLogix, Salesforce CPQ, or comparable subscription and contract billing systems.
  • Strong command of contract-driven, usage, and subscription billing models, SKU and catalog governance, and billing-related tax implications.
  • Strong familiarity with emerging AI tools used across analysis, reporting, reconciliation, process documentation, automation, and operational effectiveness.
  • A player-coach mindset—willing to set strategy and personally work the toughest accounts and exceptions.
  • Direct, credible, and steady communication in difficult customer and internal conversations.
  • Ability to develop people, address performance gaps, build team depth, and raise performance across the function.
  • Ability to lead cross-functional process change and influence upstream teams without direct authority.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in technology, IT services, telecom, or a comparable B2B services environment.
  • Multi-subsidiary billing, M&A, and systems-integration experience preferred.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Unlimited PTO, paid company holidays, hybrid/remote work, and paid bonding leave for eligible employees.
  • Employee discounts and access to an Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
