Overview

The organization is building a formal finance and accounting function to support growth, transitioning from a founder-run setup to an accrual-basis close process in Workday. This role is a hands-on, day-to-day Staff Accountant position focused on reconciliations, journal entries, and AP/AR support, helping establish general ledger discipline so the broader finance team can focus on policy and higher-level review.

The Staff Accountant will work directly with the CFO and an experienced controller consultant.

Responsibilities

  • Perform monthly and quarterly bank reconciliations in Workday, including clearing out a backlog of unapplied deposits and cash.
  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts on an accrual basis each quarter; research and correct unnatural or stale balances.
  • Support the transition to accrual-basis accounting, including:
    • prepaid amortization
    • depreciation
    • accrual entries for payroll/PTO/bonus/commission
    • other standard month-end adjustments (as directed by the Controller Consultant)
  • Assist with accounts payable, including:
    • invoice coding
    • cost-center/worktag completion
    • 1099 vendor tracking alongside the AP/payroll lead
  • Assist with accounts receivable, including:
    • cash application
    • unapplied payment research
    • support for a weekly reconciliation process for time-and-billing data
  • Support payroll-related reconciliations, including:
    • matching payroll journal entries to ADP settlement detail
    • reviewing benefits deductions for accuracy
  • Help build and maintain a documented monthly close checklist as the function matures.
  • Take on increasing responsibility for recurring, process-driven accounting work as Workday automation (bank-reconciliation, AP workflow, revenue-recognition) comes online.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required.
  • 3–5 years of general ledger / staff accounting experience, including:
    • journal entries
    • account reconciliations
    • AP/AR
    • month-end close support
  • Solid working knowledge of GAAP and double-entry accounting fundamentals.
  • Comfort with Excel for reconciliation and analysis work (lookups, pivot tables).
  • Workday Financials experience is a strong plus; this role works in Workday daily, including during an active configuration and clean-up project.
  • High attention to detail and comfort working through unresolved or messy data to find the right answer.
  • Self-starter comfortable in a lean, fast-moving environment; ambiguity is expected as this is the first dedicated staff accounting hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in a professional services or consulting business (time-and-billing, project-based revenue).
  • Prior exposure to a system conversion or ERP implementation.
  • Interest in growing into a senior accountant or assistant controller role as the function matures.
