Overview

A small, growing CPA firm is seeking a part-time Tax Manager to join their team. The ideal start date is September 15, but applicants who cannot start until after that date will also be considered. The firm emphasizes responsiveness and an excellent client experience, prioritizing work-life balance for its employees.

Responsibilities

  • Review simpler tax returns prepared by an Associate (primarily 1040s and some S-corp returns)
  • Prepare more complex tax returns, including larger 1040s and most 1120S, 1120, and 1065 returns
  • Process extensions and calculate related extension payments
  • Review bookkeeping work prepared by the Associate and assist with onboarding larger or more complex bookkeeping clients
  • Manage client communication, respond to ad hoc client questions, and assist with tax planning and tax projection
  • Supervise and provide training to the Associate and future Associates
  • Assist with streamlining firm processes and workflows

Expected Hours

  • 40 hours per week during tax season (January 15 to April 15), with a hard cap on hours to preserve work-life balance
  • Approximately 20 hours per week outside of tax season
  • Target of approximately 1,275 hours per year

The firm implements a return scheduling system to limit the flow of returns entering the preparation queue weekly, helping to maintain work-life balance during tax season.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree and CPA license (applicants with EA credentials will also be considered)
  • Minimum 5 years of experience preparing Forms 1040, 1120S, 1065, and 1120 from start to finish
  • Experience managing tax planning for high-earning individuals and small businesses
  • At least 3 years of exposure to small business bookkeeping (under $10 million), including understanding book-to-tax adjustments; experience with QuickBooks Online (QBO) is required
  • Minimum 3 years managing and developing staff or senior Associates, including offshore Associates
  • Extensive client-facing experience with strong written communication skills; comfortable interfacing with clients via Zoom or Google Meet
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems without constant supervision
  • Intermediate or higher fluency with Claude AI for tax research, workpaper preparation, organization, and bookkeeping workflows

Compensation and Benefits

  • $85,000 base salary, paid evenly throughout the year (not prorated outside of tax season)
  • 10% target bonus
  • 15% of fees for all clients brought into the firm, for as long as they remain clients
  • $500 per month QSEHRA (health reimbursement)
  • SIMPLE IRA with 3% employer match
  • Reimbursement for continuing professional education (CPE) and CPA license renewal
  • Flexible and unlimited paid time off plus birthday off
  • Fully remote position with flexible working hours
