Overview

This role involves leading and scaling the tax function for a fast-growing sports and gaming company with a diverse and evolving business portfolio. The position requires managing tax compliance, reporting, and partnering cross-functionally to integrate tax requirements into products, systems, and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Own the overall tax function and serve as the primary internal resource for tax matters across the business
  • Manage federal, state, and local income tax compliance, including coordination with external preparers, reviewing filings, and ensuring timely and accurate submissions
  • Prepare and oversee key in-house filings and reporting such as state fantasy sports tax filings, customer tax information reporting, and equity-related tax reporting
  • Lead tax information reporting for prediction market customers as requirements and products evolve
  • Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Data teams to develop and maintain customer-facing tax capabilities and validate tax calculations and reporting
  • Coordinate the annual tax provision process under ASC 740, acting as the primary liaison with external tax advisors and auditors
  • Manage the company’s R&D tax credit analysis and support documentation of qualifying activities and expenses
  • Research and communicate tax implications of new products, markets, and business initiatives in partnership with external advisors and internal stakeholders
  • Build scalable tax processes, documentation, reconciliations, and internal controls to support business growth
  • Monitor changes in tax law and information-reporting requirements, proactively identifying risks, opportunities, and operational impacts
  • Manage relationships with external tax advisors, auditors, and tax authorities

Requirements

  • 5+ years of progressive tax experience, ideally including public accounting and in-house corporate tax roles
  • CPA certification with strong technical expertise in federal and state income tax; Big Four experience strongly preferred
  • Versatile tax professional comfortable with income tax, industry-specific taxes, and customer information reporting
  • Experience overseeing external advisors while maintaining hands-on accountability
  • Skilled in reviewing complex datasets, reconciling tax calculations, and identifying data or process issues
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams on tax-related business and product needs
  • Proficient at translating complex tax requirements into clear operational and technical requirements for non-tax stakeholders
  • Comfortable working independently as the sole tax professional without a large internal team or established playbook
  • Detail-oriented, pragmatic, and able to prioritize effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • Capable of managing multiple deadlines and competing priorities without errors
  • Enthusiastic about building systems and improving processes rather than only administering existing ones

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience at a high-growth startup or within a lean finance team
  • Background in fantasy sports, gaming, fintech, financial services, prediction markets, or other highly regulated industries
  • Significant multistate tax and nexus experience
  • Experience with high-volume customer or payee information reporting
  • Experience partnering with technical teams to build tax calculations or customer-facing tax products
  • Knowledge of equity compensation tax matters, including ISOs, NSOs, RSUs, Forms 3921, and Section 83(b) elections
  • Familiarity with R&D tax credits and related documentation requirements
  • Experience implementing tax software, data workflows, or other tax infrastructure

Compensation & Benefits

  • Target starting base salary range: $128,000 to $160,000, plus target equity
  • Unlimited paid time off (with some flexibility restrictions around early NFL season weeks)
  • 16 weeks of fully paid parental leave
  • Home office stipend
  • 5% 401(k) match
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Company-paid health, dental, and vision insurance options for employees and dependents

Location

  • Remote-first company with an expectation to gather 2-3 times per year for team and company offsites, trainings, and events
