Overview

This role involves leading and shaping the organization’s accounting function as VP, Controller. Reporting to the CFO, you will own the close, consolidation, technical accounting, audit, tax compliance, and internal controls across a multi-entity group spanning media, subscription streaming, advertising, film and TV, and live sports and events.

This is a player-coach position focused on building strong foundations and scaling reporting reliability over time, including through automation and AI.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and develop the accounting team
    • Build a process-based workflow with clear ownership, review, and backup
    • Grow team capability through coaching and delegation
  • Own the close and financial reporting
    • Deliver timely, accurate consolidated results across a complex multi-entity structure
    • Improve reporting speed and usefulness
  • Set the technical accounting standard
    • Own policy and judgment for:
      • Revenue recognition for advertising, subscription and platform distribution, film and TV licensing, and live events
      • Film and content cost capitalization, amortization, and impairment
      • Programming rights
      • Complex transactions including production financings, acquisitions, dispositions, and entity restructuring
  • Build the data foundation
    • Redesign the chart of accounts and reporting dimensions so the ledger, source systems, and the data platform align
    • Use automation and AI to reduce manual work in the close, reconciliations, order-to-cash, and payables
  • Strengthen controls and lead the audit
    • Serve as the primary partner to auditors
    • Ensure increased speed and automation are supported by strong controls
  • Manage tax compliance with external advisors
    • Partnership, sales and use, and payroll matters
  • Partner across the business
    • Work with FP&A, technology, and business leaders to ensure financial information supports decision-making

Requirements

  • Deep command of US GAAP, applied with practical, commercial judgment
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • CPA required (Chartered Accountant or equivalent international qualification considered)
  • 10+ years of progressive accounting experience
    • 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller in a multi-entity organization
    • Big 4 or national-firm background strongly preferred
  • Proven track record of leading an external audit and strengthening internal controls
  • Experience leading an accounting clean-up, restructuring, acquisition, or disposition
  • Hands-on NetSuite (or similar ERP) fluency
    • Chart of accounts, subsidiaries, consolidation, and reporting (not just consuming outputs)
  • Experience redesigning a chart of accounts, implementing systems, or automating finance processes
    • Exposure to cloud data platforms, BI tools, or AI-enabled workflows is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with partnership structures (multi-entity LLCs, K-1s, allocations)
  • Comfort with film and TV project financing and accounting (single-purpose production entities, production loans, tax incentives, and distribution agreements) or ability to learn it quickly
  • Curiosity about AI and automation with a realistic view of what works today—while ensuring clean data foundations
  • Clear, confident communication with executives, auditors, and non-finance colleagues
  • Comfort working in a fast-moving, entrepreneurial environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in media or entertainment, especially:
    • Film and TV production and distribution accounting (ASC 926, participations, production incentives, and financing)
