Overview

This role is a Principal Analyst position within the Financial Planning and Analysis division at a major academic institution. Reporting to the Director of Financial Planning and Analysis, the position provides strategic financial oversight and expert guidance across multiple departments and programs. The role involves managing complex budgets from diverse funding sources including state funds, student fees, grants, gifts, endowments, and auxiliary income.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct complex financial analyses to evaluate past performance and develop forecasts supporting strategic decisions.
  • Lead development and maintenance of long-range financial models and business plans.
  • Prepare detailed analyses for operating, capital, and auxiliary budgets, including scenario planning.
  • Serve as the divisional expert on fund management and financial policies, ensuring compliance and best practices.
  • Coordinate and oversee annual budget planning processes across assigned departments, including revenue and expenditure projections.
  • Monitor budgets for compliance, performance, and variances; provide regular updates to department leaders.
  • Develop and present comprehensive financial reports, dashboards, and forecasts to senior management and stakeholders.
  • Design and implement internal control procedures to safeguard assets and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Interpret and ensure adherence to university, state, and federal financial policies.
  • Support financial systems functionality by collaborating with IT and central offices, including automation of reporting tools.
  • Provide fiscal support for capital projects, space planning, and major maintenance initiatives.
  • Manage personnel budgets, including tracking salary provisions, reclassifications, and hiring processes.
  • Participate in or lead special projects, committees, and cross-functional initiatives aligned with divisional priorities.
  • Train and mentor junior staff and administrative personnel in financial processes and best practices.
  • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused team environment dedicated to service excellence.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Ability to independently gather, analyze, and interpret complex financial data from multiple sources.
  • Proficiency in financial modeling, forecasting, and scenario analysis.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for presenting complex financial information clearly and concisely.
  • Advanced skills in spreadsheet, database, and financial software tools.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with stakeholders at all organizational levels.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities with high attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience in developing and implementing financial policies and internal controls.
  • Knowledge of university financial systems, policies, and compliance requirements is preferred.

Location

This position is fully remote with occasional in-person reporting as needed.
