Overview
This role is a fractional Financial Controller position for a US-based, remote team. The Financial Controller will own finance end to end, ensuring accurate accounting across traveler and operator transactions, driving month-end close, building scalable finance controls, maintaining compliance, and supporting strategic decision-making with financial insights.
Responsibilities
- Own the books and close every month on schedule, delivering clear financials with a short narrative explaining what changed and why.
- Start hands-on in the ledger, then document finance processes and oversee day-to-day transaction work led by a bookkeeping team.
- Plan cash by building budgets, maintaining a rolling cash forecast, and producing a runway view used by leadership.
- Build finance controls including approval workflows, spend policies, and an audit trail applicable to everyone, including founders.
- Ensure accurate marketplace accounting, including revenue recognition, customer credits and refunds, and operator payables.
- Maintain compliance by owning the tax and compliance calendar (including aviation excise taxes and multi-state obligations) and managing an outside CPA firm.
- Serve as the finance voice in strategy by providing the financial inputs that guide investment decisions and preparing for investor reporting as the organization grows.
Requirements
- Active US CPA license (required).
- 5+ years of accounting experience, including owning the month-end close at a startup or high-growth company.
- Experience building a finance function from scratch (not only maintaining an existing one).
- Strong marketplace accounting skills, including gross vs. net, funds held for others, refunds, and payables.
- Deep QuickBooks Online experience.
- Hands-on experience with US tax compliance, including sales and use tax, multi-state payroll tax, and pass-through entities.
- Comfortable using AI in daily work.
- Ability to explain financial variances to non-accountants in a few sentences.
- Absolute discretion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Aviation, charter, or travel accounting experience.
- Federal excise tax experience.
- Fundraising and investor reporting experience.
- Experience leading a remote bookkeeping team.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay is dependent on experience.
Location & Schedule
- Remote and US-based.
- Fractional to start: more hours in the first two months while learning the business, then approximately 10 hours per week, growing with the organization.
- Requires meaningful overlap with US Pacific hours.
