Overview
This role supports a $500M philanthropic initiative focused on radically reducing the burden of respiratory infections caused by respiratory viruses. The work aims to advance the technologies needed to defend against common respiratory infections, with the long-term goal of eliminating them altogether.
The position is on the initiative’s investment team, working across two primary focus areas:
- Air-cleaning technologies (ACT’s)
- Broad-spectrum preventatives (BSPs)
Initially, the role will build internal investment processes and support establishment of the investment function. Over time, the role will focus on sourcing, diligence, executing investments and grants, and portfolio management.
Responsibilities

Expand the pipeline of candidates
- Proactively engage networks (researchers, investors, founders, funders, etc.) to source new ideas and technologies.
- Manage referral channels (open RFP, referrals, etc.) and screen investment and grant opportunities.

Own projects through diligence and transaction execution
- Advance companies through early and deep/technical diligence, including evaluating science quality, development plans, team, and fit against the target product profile (TPP).
- Drive the investment or grantmaking process, coordinating with internal and external legal and diligence consultants.
- Bring projects through internal approval processes and act as the internal owner/champion.

Develop points of view on technologies
- Contribute to publishing a POV for the 5–10 most promising approaches (e.g., siRNA, T-cell vaccine, innate immune stimulators).
- Identify the key “gating datapoints” that would determine whether to kill or double down on each approach, including timing or gaps in datapoints.

Build and maintain the CRM
- Ensure the CRM captures ~all known projects.
- Maintain a process to systematically learn about/capture the best new projects early.

Portfolio management
- Support portfolio projects and lead efforts to accelerate and support projects post-investment.
- Determine what would let top projects move 2x faster beyond funding and help ensure those factors are addressed.

Map demand-side bottlenecks
- Map key stakeholders and address evidence needs and bottlenecks across regulatory, clinical, recommendations, reimbursement, and adoption/uptake.
Requirements (Minimum)
- MD/PhD in immunology or infectious disease with 2+ years of investing, BD/partnering, or grantmaking experience or minimum 5 years of biotech investor experience in immunology or infectious disease at VC fund
- Experience with portfolio management, including portfolio construction and post-award management
- Ability to translate scientific diligence into strategic investment recommendations and a coherent capital deployment view
- Product development experience (and/or broad exposure via investing in or supporting companies)
- Experience with project management from launch to completion (project quarterback) with high openness to getting hands dirty
- Extremely self-directed, diligent, very fast learner, excellent communicator, very action oriented
- Compelled by the mission to greatly reduce the burden of and risks from respiratory viruses
Preferred Qualifications
- Public health / global health / biosecurity experience
- MBA or MPH degrees
- Experience with issuing non-dilutive funding / grant programs
Compensation & Benefits
- US base salary range: $200,000 - $300,000 (annual)
- Additional benefits may include: equity, company bonus or sales commissions/bonuses, 401(k) plan, and medical, dental, and vision benefits, plus wellness stipends.
- Salary range may be inclusive of several career levels and will be narrowed during the interview process based on experience, qualifications, and location.
- Applicants not located in the US may request the annual salary range for their location during the interview process.
Location & Work Model
- Hybrid or remote
- This role is available either in an office or a remote location 35+ miles (56+ km) from a Stripe office.
In-office expectations
- Office-assigned workers spend at least 50% of the time in a given month in their local office or with users.
Remote expectations
- A remote location is defined as 35 miles (56 kilometers) or more from one of the organization’s offices.
- While occasional office attendance for team/business meetings, on-sites, meet-ups, and events is welcome, the expectation is regular work from home.
- Relocating to a remote location is not covered.
