Overview
A growing fintech organization is seeking a Senior Accountant to play a critical role in scaling its Finance department while managing payroll operations across the US, Canada, Australia, and Saudi Arabia. This role combines core corporate accounting responsibilities with ownership of the payroll function, offering an opportunity to develop expertise in multi-state payroll, labor compliance, state tax nexus, and international payroll.
Responsibilities
Payroll Processing
- Manage routine payroll processing for salaried employees in the US, Canada, Australia, and Saudi Arabia with high accuracy and confidentiality.
- Lead multi-state relocation compliance for US payroll, including timely state unemployment registrations, local tax withholdings, and updates to state-specific payroll rules.
- Coordinate statutory paid family and medical leave (PFML) calculations, short-term disability top-ups, and fractional-day pay adjustments for US payroll while maintaining FLSA exempt status.
- Execute local social charges and taxation requirements for non-US payroll.
- Collaborate with HR and external payroll/legal compliance advisors to monitor local regulatory changes and update policies accordingly.
- Serve as a responsive point of contact for employee inquiries related to payroll, deductions, and tax withholding.
Core Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Prepare multi-currency journal entries, including payroll and compensation-related entries, income statement fluctuations, and balance sheet variance analyses.
- Support accurate and timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes in coordination with the Accounting team.
- Prepare balance sheet account reconciliations, identify errors, and make necessary corrections; escalate unresolved issues.
- Assist with annual external and internal audits by preparing schedules and supporting documentation.
- Develop and improve procedures and controls, identifying opportunities to leverage AI for efficiency.
- Stay current on US GAAP and IFRS changes to ensure proper accounting treatment.
- Manage General Ledger mapping for payroll, ensuring accurate departmental cost allocation, intercompany cross-charges, and tax liability tracking.
- Maintain comprehensive process documentation and standard operating procedures for accounting and payroll tasks.
- Cross-train with team members to ensure coverage across accounting areas.
- Support ad hoc financial information requests and special projects as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of general accounting experience, preferably in SaaS or fintech industries.
- Experience combining Big 4 public accounting and industry roles is preferred.
- Strong interest and aptitude for learning and managing end-to-end multi-state payroll operations, state tax nexus, and statutory leave mechanics.
- Solid knowledge of US GAAP, IFRS, month-end close procedures, internal controls, and balance sheet reconciliations.
- Intermediate to advanced Excel skills (including VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, data modeling) with strong attention to detail.
- Experience with NetSuite or modern HRIS/payroll platforms such as ADP, Gusto, Rippling, or Paylocity is highly desirable.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and navigate complex multi-state regulations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial and payroll matters clearly.
- Discretion in handling confidential personnel data.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA, ACCA, or CIMA certification (qualified or in progress) preferred.
Compensation & Benefits
- Estimated annual base salary range: $95,000 - $125,000, dependent on skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
