Overview

This role is responsible for reinsurance strategy, treaty structuring, placement, and administration across every program supported by Stonehaven Specialty Insurance Company.

The position reports to the Chief Risk Officer and works closely with Actuarial, Finance, Claims, and the program teams. Reinsurer and intermediary relationships, treaty wording expertise, statutory reinsurance accounting knowledge, and operational discipline to manage cessions and recoverables are essential.

Responsibilities

  • Develop preferred treaty wording for security, downgrade, offset, insolvency, and dispute-resolution terms, and apply it consistently across every program.
  • Structure and place reinsurance for each program, including:
    • Quota shares with caps
    • Sliding-scale and profit commissions
    • Excess-of-loss and facultative cover
    • Whole-account placements that keep net retention within appetite
  • Evaluate reinsurance attached to a program and coordinate independent approval of reinsurers and collateral providers with the Director of Credit & Collateral Risk prior to binding.
  • Perform risk-transfer testing on every treaty with Actuarial and Finance to preserve statutory credit and protect Schedule F.
  • Partner with Actuarial to identify risk not ceded, including tail exposure above treaty caps and exposure outside treaty terms.
  • Run cession operations, including:
    • Producing data reinsurers require
    • Reconciling cessions to financials with Finance
    • Meeting treaty reporting and notification requirements
  • Manage reinsurance recoverables with Finance and Claims, including cash calls on large losses, and resolve disputes before they impair surplus.
  • Ensure every program has reinsurance bound before it quotes business; plan renewals, commutations, and runoff, staggering renewal dates where practical.
  • Build and manage a treaty contract management system with Technology so terms, subjectivities, renewals, and facultative placements are searchable and tracked.
  • Support the Reinsurance Security Committee and manage relationships with reinsurers, captives, and reinsurance intermediaries.

Requirements

Must Haves

  • 10+ years in P&C reinsurance at a carrier, fronting carrier, reinsurer, or reinsurance intermediary, including treaty structuring and placement.
  • Direct experience drafting and negotiating treaty wordings, including security, offset, insolvency, and dispute-resolution clauses.
  • Working knowledge of statutory reinsurance accounting, risk-transfer testing, and Schedule F.
  • Experience administering cessions and collecting recoverables, including large-loss cash calls.

Nice to Haves

  • Prior experience at a fronting, hybrid fronting, or program carrier, where reinsurance often arrives with the program.
  • Experience with captive, ILS, or other collateralized reinsurance capacity.
  • Professional designation such as ARe or CPCU.
  • Experience with reinsurance administration or contract management systems.
