Controller

Overview

This role is the organization’s first accounting hire and will report to the Head of Finance. You will own accounting and financial operations end to end, including transitioning the books from an external bookkeeper to an in-house function, implementing systems and controls, and supporting the organization as it scales toward commercial launch under US GAAP.

Responsibilities

• Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close under US GAAP
• Select and drive implementation of a manufacturing-ready ERP, including chart of accounts design, inventory, BOM, and costing
• Manage AP, vendor payments, and spend controls
• Build and lead the accounting and financial operations team
• Transition accounting from an external bookkeeper to an in-house function
• Own audit readiness
• Design product costing and COGS methodology, including standard costs, overhead allocation, and accruals
• Set accounting policy and write technical memos across revenue, inventory, capitalization, software, R&D and IP, leases, and equity comp
• Assess the accounting treatment of supplier, manufacturing, and compute agreements
• Design and document internal controls
• Support the Head of Finance on budgeting, burn, and unit economics
• Manage outside tax advisors on income, sales/use, and R&D credit matters

Requirements

Must Haves

• 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
• Public accounting background; Big 4 strongly preferred
• Hands-on ERP implementation in a manufacturing or hardware environment
• Hands-on inventory and product cost accounting experience
• Broad technical accounting depth: revenue, capitalization, software, IP
• Experience leading a company through external audits
• Track record of building finance processes from scratch at a fast-growing company
• Builder mindset: hands-on execution while building the team around you

Preferred Qualifications

• CPA
• Controller or Assistant Controller experience at a venture-backed hardware, robotics, autonomous vehicle, or consumer electronics company
• Experience taking a company from pre-revenue to commercial launch
• Experience with contract manufacturers in Asia
• Experience with modern spend and automation tools such as Ramp
